When I last posted, there weren't any screenshots visible, so I was just going off past experiences on criticizing white+ light blue borders. Fortunately in this case, the simple font and shadows salvage things. Overall, I have no problem with the main fonts and OP/ED as they appear in the screenshots. Size is good, styles are good, and again the shadows go a long way in making the serifed OP/ED subs readable. That styling guide Lupin linked is a great read, you may want to check the overscan mask as they suggest. Also, ++massive points for leaving that "walk you to school" line broken up into 2 rows as they were on the DVD, instead of making 1 long line across the whole bottom of the screen. DVDs do that for a reason, to keep subs in the center and minimize side-to-side eye-scanning.

As Dagger said, the red does seem a little off in that insert-song scene. Maybe do a white + black outline there? Since that's a "neutral" combination if nothing else. Also, the font for the insert song seems a little... idk... "too silly" for the scene? That font (Kirsten ITC, iirc) feels more like something you'd see in a show like Happy Lesson or Akikan. Using the same style as the main subs would work, with a "closer" color and maybe italicizing to differentiate it from the dialogue.

I should state that I don't have a huge monitor (1152x860 4:3) and I don't often watch HDTV/BD files. So maybe I'm not the best judge of size in this case. But imho it's better to err on the side of being big enough for imperfect vision / smaller displays / longer viewing distance.


Sidenote: DaggerLite, are you the same "Dagger" in Dagger & Desbreko?

I honestly need some help to learn how to encode. I don't understand all these codes, specifically ... how to find them FIRST and then properly use them.

Use a second set of fonts with lower sizes. Because your doing this for fans so you have to please the fans then yourself. Are you going to do two sets of font sizes?

Well, with that size on the font he's clearly intending to make it work on his monitor, since they are too large for native resolution. While I can sympathize with the sentiment, fonts should match the native resolution of the video, and if that is a problem then a second set of subtitles for lower resolutions may be an option. Kanji/kana seem like a lot of extra work though, unless they can be ripped.
