Haven't watched them yet, but my understanding is this is an upscale and the Blu-ray source quality was poor right from the beginning. As for the subs, they had a number of errors in the original release and I don't know if Coalgirls fixed any of them. If they were fixed they are decent, if not Solstice has them beat.

As for all series - Avisynth resizer methods. Most of the 1080p that looks prettier than 720p is due to poor resizer methods. Which is fine, and makes 1080p have value. Heck, I get 720p instead of 480p for this reason myself. But, it's still an upscale.

If on the Blu-ray box it says 1080p/720p, then it's both versions. If it says 720p only, then it's 720p only. You really need to give me facts and convince me that anime 1080p blu-ray rips from 1080p original source is an upscale of a 720p. This is what I need to be convinced with. If your pointing out at the original source of 720p being unscaled to 1080p then I can understand that.

1080p looks better because TVs and BD players and stuff usually don't use more intense resizer methods, such as Spline64 or Lanczos4. They tend to use lighter methods, such as Bilinear of Bicubic, which loses details in the transition.


Tatsujin: All anime Blu-Rays in Japan are 1080p in their source format. Just like all TV in japan (save AT-X) is 1440x1080 or 1920x1080. But, just like you have station upscales, you have studio upscales in BD.
I can't show you Tears to Tiara 1080->720->1080 vs. 1080->1080 rips, but if it's OK, I could show you how some supposed "1080p" shows are upscales.

All anime is broadcast in 1080i. Sorry, 1080p was wrong. But, yeah, that's the broadcasting standards. However, it can look like complete carp, as I'm sure you saw in that K-On BS-TBS raw I posted. This is a station upscale from 480p or 720p, depending on the source they got.

Blu-Ray is 1080p, and is an upscale from 720p, unless it's a remake of an older series that wasn't planning on BDs and wasn't broadcast in HD (I.E., E7, Non-00 Gundam series, etc).


Anyways, Tatsujin, these frames are from Gundam 00's 1080p, which is supposed to be the best BD of all time. One is 1080->720->1080, one is 1080->1080->1080. This way, all resizer artifacts are canceled out by equal distribution.

THORA used R1 subs and 720p only
Tomodachi is also doing R2 in both 1080p and 720p using gg's script.

THORA is confirmed to be doing Darker than Black. Stand Alone Complex will be released in 720p only.

First one, since looking at his arm (darker side) and the chair part. You can tell there is a noticeable light/dark (whatever you call it) between the two. Tho' the difference is like very, very minimum.

Something's weird, Gundam 00 S2 only goes up to episode 10. I searched for the fourth volume and there is none and the raws also stop at episode 10. That was back in May. It's been couple of months now. Did something happen? Did they delay them?

So far I went on J-List and Play-Asia. Nothing found on there for volume 4. TT's raws/ISO goes up to volume 3 which is up to episode 10. I guess that explains the stall.
