Yeah only because of what he looks like... WTF really felt like slaping the hell out of the storyline creators at that point.
On the Mira/Erza part, they did say that Erza always lost to Mira when they where younger or something like that can't really remember, and Mira was already an S-Class mage when the whole insident happend with their lil'sister.

He's just thoughtful of Erza. Furthermore he has other matters to attend to ;) to which this small struggle just pales in comparison.

I'm just glad Erza didn't go all emotional, and shook it off saying she will deal with it later :)
