BlazBlue

Bloodfox:
I got Blazblue: Continuum Shift recently and I'm kinda disappointed at the game.
The roster is too short and half of it is a clone of Guilty Gear X (or at least heavily inspired in it) but not animated as smoothly. I know Street Fighter II only had 8 characters originally but that was 20 years ago, we have different standards nowadays.
The characters feel stiff and the controls are not are not completely responsive which can lead to to some frustration. And no, Its not a matter of skill, because I can pull off backwards half-circle + forward just fine in other games (like GGX) but in Blazblue sometimes it doesn't register!
I found the Story mode to be completely boring and I just don't have patience for it after the needlessly long tutorial, specially since Story mode is just a collection of still images with voice over. Arc System Works seams to have forgotten that the main reasons people buy fighting games is for gameplay, not story. The time and money they wasted creating story mode could have been used to develop a few more characters and stages. If I want to just watch something, I'll watch an anime, the story is better and at least its properly animated.
The Network mode could have been better too. It takes 2 to 3 minutes to find a ranked match and its takes too much time to get in and out of matches (which is probably why it takes so long to find a match).
I expected much better from the studio that gave us the Guilty Gear franchise.
That is my opinion.
Anyone else is disappointed with this game?

its fun but until you KNOW all the shit characters can do its boring and repetitive with some characters being WAY OP(robot girl ...)

I'm a big fan of Blazblue and I think I spent more time on it the last 18 months then any other game, so I thought I would share my opinion.

Comparing fighters can be pretty hard because they are sooo different in many ways, if you are used to some games that you prefer or have played more it can be hard to get used to new ones.

CT had a kinda small roster with 12 characters and CS increased that 15 (18 with the 3 DLC chars), it may sound small compared to other fighters but every single character has a unique style. What do you prefer, quality or quantity ?

Every single fighter is different, not only in style and characters but also with inputs and timing so if you are used to a certain game you have to adapt to a new one even if the inputs are the same.

Blazblue probobly has the best story mode of any fighter I've played. Everyone may not like it but it has multiple endings including a joke ending (most of them are hilarious) for every char. Most other fighters has a small movie or something when you finish arcade mode with that character, or 2 pictures with 3 sentances of text (looking at you MvC3 =p). Blazblue has alot of single player content, some people like it some people dont but atleast it feels like a complete game.

Netcode could be better and the loading inbetween matches could be a little bit faster. I noticed you live in europe and the sad part is not that many people play it over her, try and find a few people close to you and play player matches and you wont really have a problem with that

Blazblue calamity trigger (first game) was kinda unbalanced, CS (second game) is alot better and soon there will be a patch for CS2 that will make it even more balanced

Yeah I really like the game and it would be fun to see more people play it. If you are interested try it out, its pretty cheap now and its good entertainment if you are into anime but not that big of a fighting fan.

I grabbed CT a long time ago, but didn't get CS because money :( but BlazBlue is probably my favorite 2D fighter... ALL the characters are actually playable and it's easily one of the best balanced games around. I love the quality over quantity approach (OH GOD TEKKEN) 12 characters is fine tbh.

I'm actually interested in the story for once in my life, fighting games rarely have a coherent plot or a story worth telling but BlazBlue has sorta solved that. I've been in a really tense mood since finishing CT. The plot is all open ended and shit... I should get around to buying CS

Anyway, who necroed this thread? I remember reading this a LONG time ago... don't worry, I'm glad

I prefer both. Quality and Quantity. Look a Street Fighter IV and Super Street Fighter IV. SF IV had 19 characters all of them felt unique also, even when you compare Ken to Ryu. SSFIV added 10 more charaters to the roster for a total of 29 (plus 4 with the upcoming Arcade Edition DLC for a total of 33). In my opinion this amount of characters adds more way replay value than 18 Characters and a Story mode.
Now, one might say that SFIV only has so many characters because its not a new franchise, that they just took characters from previous games and rendered them in 3D. But that takes as much work as creating a new character, specially when balance is so important to Capcom. Also, Arc System works could have done the same. They could have continued the Guilty Gear franchise and just add 12 new characters to that (which would have been much better) but the reason they didn't was this:

"The generation of Guilty Gear players has become a certain age – maybe a little bit too old for playing games. So making that reset brings in a new generation of fighting game players. Then they will be with us for the next few years". Toshimichi Hori - Arc Systems Works

So instead of letting a franchise evolve, they let it die and start again for the most illogical of reasons. Gamers don't stop liking games when they become a certain age. Its the reason why Street Fighter, Super Mario and Donkey Kong are still around!

I know this, mate. :)
I'm no stranger to 2D fighters, I've played pretty much every 2D fighter worth its salt except Killer Instinct. I can adapt to 2D fighters quite well, I'm no tournament player but I'm quite decent, I think. I've played the game for a week now, I have completed Arcade on Hell difficulty and Legion on hard, I have beaten some players with a lot more experience and it still feels a bit stiff to me and I still struggle with with pulling off moves like Carnage Scissors successfully, while I have no problem pulling off similar moves in GGX and other 2D fighters.

What I love about Blazblue is the the soundtrack which is just as awesome as I thought it would be!
I'm glad there are people out there who did enjoy playing story mode but its just not for me, When I put a fighting game in, I want the focus of the game to be fighting, I'd rather have all that artwork unlocked through other modes, like Survival and Time-attack.
