Umineko no Naku Koro ni
chronofate:
I had the sensation that I'm watching an adaptation of "And Then There Were None" (or "Ten Little Niggers") by Agatha Christie....

Schizophrenia =/= split personality disorder.

So far, I've read all of the manga of this that was out on onemanga, and I actually found it fairly enjoyable. Maybe it's because I didn't watch all of those incredibly similar shows that you guys keep mentioning that I've never heard of (well, partly never heard of because no particular names were mentioned, save Detective Conan... though Detective Conan probably didn't involve crazy witch shit).
At the moment, I'm seeing this as a more drawn out version of Higurashi, and I'm not really minding it too much. Maybe it's because I'm not normally a fan of this genre, but I think this show can and will probably get better. It probably won't be quite like Higurashi, but I don't really care if it is. I'll simply watch it to get the same feel.
I'll probably be downloading this once it starts getting past where the manga is.

I dare say you're entitled to expect more given the target demographic. Still, it might've been tolerable had Battler not been such a vexing entity. I approve of a minor case of crossover here to introduce Mr battler to the finer points of arguing:

I think I'll dodge the MPD / DID debate for now, though I'm more or less in the same camp.

Probably because Umineko appears to have been pieced together using some of the most overdone clichés in mystery writing and early mystery / horror movies; this is why you'll see more literature references than anime ones. If you've never read or watched older mystery works, it's less surprising that you'd find the premise acceptable. This show is poor, sadly, and knowing that the same people behind the amazing first season of Higurashi (and acceptable second season) are behind this is painful.

I don't really see how that gives you an excuse for just arbitrarily putting it down as "poor".
"If you've watched "this", "this", and "this", then this has a lot of cliches and I'm arbitrarily putting it down as a "piece of shit"."
You can say that sentence for almost anything. Rather, some of the most "not cliche" stuff sucks the most when it actually comes down to how good it is.
Hell, what the fuck is so strange about Higurashi? "A bunch of people go crazy and kill each other. If you've seen this other thing where a bunch of people go crazy and kill each other, then this is cliche, and it sucks". "Y'know, this whole world conquest thing that they're doing in Code Geass has been tried several times in history! Fucking boring!"
I don't mind a little cliche with obscure western movies/novels that I apparently never heard of. Hell, I'm sure Japanese people don't either, considering they're... y'know... Japanese. I don't think it's a poor offering by the studio, I think it's just one that isn't really as suited for a western audience... which isn't surprising, considering it's first and foremost made for Japanese otaku, not us. Apparently most of the anidb crowd shares my hopes for this show getting better sooner or later... or maybe they don't even mind it at all as it is now. I know I don't particularly mind it.
