--- Quote from: dbml on July 09, 2009, 08:37:39 PM ---I know it sounds like a great way to do a series, but repetitiveness is just something I can't stand. Even if it is altered slightly each time... that's not enough.

Higurashi didn't really repeat events as such though; with the change in perspectives and choices, whole new scenarios unfolded. The things that didn't change were hints as to what was really going on behind the scenes, while the arcs provided in depth details about the cast; in an "uniform" timeline, this information could never have been presented; this approach actually has an advantage over traditional VN ports, since, by virtue of a single timeline, you lose a lot of information (see FSN for one of the better known examples).

I'll concede that it's not "repetition", but it's the easiest way to describe what is happening. I was never a fan of those books that gave options as you went through it, whatever they're called. I'm the same with anime.
I'll make an analogy to Breath of Fire V. In that, you only had a certain number of "steps" (what I call it I guess) you could make before the counter reached 100... and then it was game over and you had to restart... but you keep your status and get all your equipment back when you start over again. And you can take a different path the next time. And you have to do it over and over and over until you're strong enough to beat it without having to restart. That is the most monotonous and boring concept I have ever dealt with. The anime falls to the same problem for me. I don't want to have to wade through all the resets to figure out what is going on. It starts to get really dull.

You don't know how to play Breath of Fire V do u? =P From the way i see it Higurashi was about telling smaller stories that were each intresting and at the same time giving out bits of clues and information that you could use to try to fit into the bigger picture and work out the mystery behind it. And like i said, u saw up to ep 8 which ain't even half way through the series. You'll never comprehend how godly Rika is ;D

I just wonder if we watched the same thing; the first three arcs of Higurashi were pure brilliance, and if the rest of the show had held that class, it'd quite likely have been one of my favourite shows; exposition, pacing and little details were great. Hell, the first and second arcs have almost nothing in common, so I'm unsure of what this horrible repetition you can't stand stems from. If only the second season hadn't been such an disappointment...

--- Quote from: dbml ---That's a load of bull. You must only watch a very select genre of anime if you always see those things. I sure don't. As for people getting killed off, I like that concept too... when someone dies once. Not when they get resurrected again and again just to get killed off in a different horrifying manner. I call that boring.

...Well, whatever, I disagree. That's off-topic anyway.

I didn't think the second season was so bad. At least it finally explained what was going on.

Ok, Groundhog's Day. Live the same day over and over again until you get everything right. Lots of things could be different, but it's still the same damn day! That's how the anime goes. Wooo, new stuff happens. Characters get killed... again. Yay, now let's do it again in another interesting way! ::) Sorry, not for me. Maybe I'll finish the first series one day, if I ever feel like torturing myself like Maria's voice in this one does.

Should best out of 3/5/whatever -matches be stopped in sports? They're just replaying the same match anyway.
