It was speculation; logically, few of us believe in witches, magic or the supernatural as a matter of course, so if you're confronted by a situation like that, you'd seek a way to explain it that conforms with how you view reality. Which is more likely? That a witch materalised and showed herself to Maria, or that someone made use of Maria's rather unstable nature to deceive her into thinking that she met a witch?

It's based on a set of VNs by the same people who made Higurashi. Are they similar? Due to the direction of this production it's hard to say; the quality really seems to suffer in comparison to Higurashi, and so the similarities may be merely superficial. We'll know in a few episodes though.

Well then can u explain the gold? Either its fake and that twists the whole story, or it got "magicly" on, which means the being has to be supernatural.

What...? Most of the cast aren't even certain that the gold exists; it's speculation. Klaus and his wife know that it exists in some form, but that alone hardly proves any supernatural doings.

For instance l liked Higurashi cuz the first season was questions, and the second was answers and salvation. while third is Finale (only a few eps)

No, it showed one bar of gold. Even if all of this supposed gold had been shown, it wouldn't have mattered, because neither Battler nor his stepmother had seen it.

Umineko is constructed the same way as Higurashi. There are 4 question arcs, and the future second season will probably have 3-4 answer arcs.

Each arc contains the two day period on Rokkenjima, where the murders happen. Battler, the main character, argues against a certain someone whether the crimes are committed by humans or by supernatural means. This is referred as a chess game between the two.

Ah. Well, that'd explain some of the idiosyncracies.

So the third episode is out, and hey, we even got some character development! It was kinda obvious that Eva couldn't be that much of a bitch all the time, but still. Too bad that it lasted what, 15 seconds? Oh well. The series is still really, really boring though, not to mention it's kind of funny how they try to present Battler as someone smart. Oh, and why the hell isn't Maria in an institution by now? Not only is she clearly retarded and/or insane, she's also knowledgeable about occult. And she's nine. I hope this gets explained in a proper way, other then "rich families sure are eccentric".

Wow. This series is so bad that it's brilliant! Having Battler talk logic is hilarious. He's easily the stupidest of all the characters in the show. And as much as I hated Maria in the first two episodes, she's now my favorite character. Those facial expressions are priceless!

If I can just get some confirmation that this series will span two cools/cours/whatevers then I will start following it in "real time."
I always prefer to watch a series straight through, which means that I wait until something is fully aired and subbed before starting it. For all the 12/13 episode series that are coming out this summer, I can stand to wait 3 months for them to play out so I can watch them, but waiting 6 months for something like this that doesn't exactly sound like high cinema, well, that seems kind of silly.

So basically, since I want to watch this but know that it isn't actually very good, I will chose to watch it week by week rather than waiting 6 months for it. I'm just looking for a TV schedule or something that will show me how many episodes this is supposed to run...

Meh, this show was doomed to failure and derision before it ever began. Since the premise has been done before, it's not fresh or new, and is subject to heavy criticism. The fact that it doesn't live up to Higurashi has made it pretty much a dud, regardless of whether it's a decent anime on it's own or not. When I was first forced to watch Higurashi, I thought exactly the same stuff as I think about this show now. The real hook came in the fourth episode, and further on as I started to really like the characters. My only real knock against Umineko is that the animation isn't as good as Higurashi. The voice acting is OK, I've heard better, certainly, but it's not atrocious either. I think they just tried too hard. A murder in the second episode and already spamming a "scary little girl" just doesn't help. I'll just keep waiting. I'm sure I'll eventually start liking some of the characters.

Even if I don't, I'm fine with just watching people getting capped in a brutal way, and not knowing who did it makes it at least compelling to watch. I'll probably see it through to the end if only to find out what happens. So what if it's not "as good as Higurashi"? This isn't necessarily a "bad" anime in it's own right, but the way people talk you'd think it was the worst one ever produced. Just my opinion, though.

Actually, I don't think it was doomed from the start. More then comparing with Higurashi, most of the hype came from people who played the games. So if it would keep the level of quality Higurashi had, which shouldn't be hard, no one would complain. Sadly, it failed to do even that.
To be frank, while the amount of shows I've seen isn't that great, this is so far one of the very worst of them.

Ugh, exposition hell /facepalm; it was old in the 50s, and it's not any less annoying now. Evidently killing off the exposition witch didn't help, because now the true master of it has taken center stage. I can only assume that this was better done in the VN (though if the same exposition idiocy was present there, I can't see why it got such high ratings). I'm waiting for the "reset" to see if things take a turn for the better, but I have my doubts.

As for Maria, this is getting old. Presumably she's schizophrenic (as opposed to possessed), since no one seems to consider her rantings and eerie knowledge of the occult strange, and so are aware of her medical condition. Then again, this is only a valid interpretation if the characters are somewhat logical, and, well...

Plus points for Maria watching Higurashi on TV though. What can I say, I'm weak to things like that.

This is anime. In anime, everyone is oblivious to EVERYTHING. I suppose I wouldn't like it as much if they weren't.

You can only experience higurashi once. After the first few scenes that make you cringe and pull out your hair, you will never get such feeling from seeing that stuff ever again. It's like the first time you watch a horror movie and see the girl walking around slowly in the dark waiting for the murderer to pounce on her. The scene was scary the first time, but after that it just becomes laughable and even annoying.

That being said, the OP and ED of this series are freaking awesome, as well as some of the other short music collections found through the series (The organ music had my subwoofer shaking the entire house).
