Author Topic: Linux on PS3, anyone try? (Read 4134 times)

I figured this would be more fitting in technology but if you feel it's best suited in the gaming thread just move it over, sorry!

So lately I've been doing quite a bit of research on installing linux on the ps3 and whether it would actually be worth it or not. I know a long time ago when the topic of linux on ps3 first flooded the net it wasn't all that great, everything ran pretty crappy and slow but now it seems like with Yellow Dog Linux it runs flawlessly.

This is a link of a Seagate 250gb hard drive that fits the ps3 and works perfectly with it. Although I don't think I should even bother with the hard drive because when you reformat the hard drive to make a partition to install an OS, it gives you 3 options. 1 is to keep everything for the ps3, 2 is to keep 10gb towards the other OS, and the 3rd option is to leave 10gb for the ps3.

I'm curious to know what your thoughts are on this. Have you tried this or have thought/researched it as well? If you have tried it, can you give some experienced feedback.

yup, and it's awesome. it works perfectly, you can also boot up windows XP using Linux. I used Yellow Dog.

Well I finished the whole installation process and everything works great, unfortunately I'm running a standard definition tv so it looks like ass. Like the resolution is 800x600 with font size 8... So for now I'm not going to bother with it too much until I can get a nice hdtv which hopefully will be within a couple months.

If you ever, and hopefully you do, want to upgrade, go for a 1080p HDTV.

Now you see the point in getting a proper HDtv to work with the PS3

Oh I do plan on it! As of right now I'm looking towards this 28" Hanns-G that has HDMI. With this monitor I would be able to run my ps3 and pc on for now, unfortunately it's only 1 HDMI port and I would like to have my pc connected via DVI to HDMI cable. Possibly even get an HDMI system selector switch thingy for that.

I attempted to mess with the settings a bit on the linux but when I tried to change the resolution, there's no option to change it because of the SDTV, at least I was able to change the font size to something larger but it doesn't seem to help much when the windows are massive.

My impression of PS3 Linux was that it is too slow for any real work. Linux on the Xbox was far more usable, despite having 1/4th the RAM.

Haha maybe I can get linux to fix my microwave

Another thing I will need to look into once I get a nice HDTV for my ps3 would be to get a wireless usb keyboard and mouse so that I could really enjoy the linux while relaxing in the bed or something.

I wonder what would happen with a linux powered car .... then I think about an MS powered car >_< ..

ps3 uses a cell processor, which is closer to a gpu than a cpu and isn't suited for regular pc apps. it was made for running mass small calculations, such as md5 cracking.
