Ponyo on a cliff by the sea
« on: July 04, 2009, 10:22:52 PM »
For anyone not wanting to see Ponyo in the theater first, and impatient enough not to want to wait for a better release, you can get a DVD-rip with english subs and 6 channel DTS here. The release does suffer from some artifacts, but it's watchable (although some might disagree).

Edit: thought about offering it here, but I think we'd all better wait for worthier encode.

Hmmz. My friend apparently has a DVD-rip of Ponyo. I wonder if it's not the one you just linked to. If not and it's better I'll let you know where he got it.

Yeah. It's up at Tokyo Toshokan though. It looks like after I went to bed tons more seeders and leechers showed up for ponyo! But somehow the DL is still so slow >.< Moar seeders please!

Made a comment in the torrent, though it won't get much response there.

Quote
I hope a dubbed one gets released soon on BakaBT, why?

According to this link the following voices will be featured: Frankie Jonas as Sosuke, Noah Cyrus as Ponyo, Cate Blanchett as Granmamare, Liam Neeson as Fujimoto, Tina Fey as Lisa, Madison Davenport as Kumiko, Matt Damon as Koichi, Betty White, Cloris Leachman & Lily Tomlin.

MAN, I knew Miyazaki's movies were popular, but popular enough to get Hollywood starts to voice act!? I'm looking forward to seeing how Damon, Neeson & Blanchett do on the voice acting. Though I remember Billy Bob T voice acting on Princess Momonoke, and being pretty good about it..

Also, that trailer made me really "high" on this movie so that's what I'll be doing when I'm done with all of my homework tomorrow, watching it that is.  :-D

Liam should be a narrator for more movies, he's got this sweet voice that suits this movie.

All of the Disney-released Miyazaki movie dubs have Hollywood stars as VAs, because Disney has the money to pay for them. Although as discussed in the recent "English Dubs" thread, film/on-camera acting talent doesn't necessarily translate into voice acting talent.

Got any old fansubs on HDD/DVD/CD? Please take a look at this thread.

I went to see this in theaters. It was Miyazaki's worst film yet. I've only seen Nausicca, Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away and Mononoke, but all of those were considerably better than Ponyo. Maybe it's because the other movies I've seen weren't his kid movies, and Ponyo just went under my head.

The visuals were incredible as usual, but the story was downright boring. The characters fell flat at times too. Disney's original adaptation of The Little Mermaid is far superior.

You just listed almost all the great ones. Compare to poco rosso maybe...

But this one I hear is a weird one. Same as Tales of Earth and Sea.

Without posting it, that was what I was thinking about when I posted, the money, that is. Well, they must have some sort of talent for voice acting since they were casted for Miyazaki's Ponyo. They wouldn't just cast them for their names, I hope.

The dub was actually pretty well done. Liam Neeson in particular was great. However, Ponyo was annoying as fuck and for the majority of the movie I just wanted her to shut the hell up. The dub of the ending theme was absolutely awful as well.

Also, this article is actually very insightful and accurate:

I watched the Japanese version and I liked it a lot.

I love the visuals and it was cute as hell.  Really great for a younger audience.

I will agree the story and characters were kind of shallow, but I wasn't really expecting Mononoke or Spirited Away kind of depth.

Ponyo is on a boat.

Lmao, though the edited version would fit better. The film was rated G, after all.

I think it's supposed to be that way.

Honestly, I found spirited away very shallow as well. But I'm behind in my Miyazakis. Need to watch Earth Sea and Ponyo.
