Ended up getting 11 of 12 from qIIq so I don't know when gg started translating more on-screen text.  You definitely lose out if you don't get that information.  The beginnings of the episodes have a rapid fire stream of text that provides character and plot background some of which isn't actually shown directly in the series.  There is also a great deal of background/environmental text that provides subtle commentary on events and characters (such as Hitagi's confession about her past happening specifically in a "middle school second grade" classroom; see also the frequent "Danger" and "Entry Forbidden" signs.)

Much like Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei you can get by without all the extra text translations but you're really missing out.  Series that actually have even a modicum of depth and artistry (which is too rare in anime) should be fully appreciated.  Sometimes it's not just about the plot and purty ppl (contrary to 95% of mainstream entertainment.)
Makes me wonder why I dropped it.

for some reason the scene where hitagi cuts paper with scizors at the end of the episode made me remember Shouko from baka to test ... :D

Another thing I've been putting off, that I managed to finish.

Let me just say that while I wouldn't say "the best" it is now one of the three series I consider, for different reasons, the best anime I've ever seen.
And I've seen quite a bit. Not as many as some people, but still.

I just hope that Shinbo hates it enough for the second season never to be made.

they used up pretty much all material from the book I think so no, no second season, TV version ended very nicely, and the OVAs are pretty good.

By second season I mean adapting other novels in the series, whether they'll call it Bakemonogatari or their respective titles. Seeing as some of them aren't even released yet, they're far from having used up all of the material.

Oh well, I guess Shinbo didn't hate Bakemonogatari enough, after all:

At least it's the prequel one, I don't have anything against animating that.
(Double posting since this one's worth a bump)

w00t! That was predictable, considering Bakemonogatari's unprecedented success, but still awesome to hear.

That's great news. I really wanted to know how the relationship between Araragi and Shinobu came to be.

I didn't exactly understand the conclusion to 15.

Did cat-Hanekawa tell Koyomi to get under the light so he couldn't use his vampire powers to regenerate, or did she want him to be able to summon Shinobu from his shadow to defeat her?

The first 12 episodes were the tv anime that aired, and got subbed by gg. The remaining 3 were aired online by shaft and got subbed by pem. They continue and finish off the Tsubasa cat arc. Just check out Tokyo Toshokan for them.
