SHAFT is the animation studio responsible for Bakemonogatari (as well as all the [upcoming] shows related to it). The visual cues you referred to are trademarks of Akiyuki Shinbou, the studio's main director. A lot of shows from this studio (Maria Holic, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Arakawa under he Bridge, and many more) have that same visual style. It's gotten to a point where you can easily recognize the studio if you see that style being used.

The show is a mix of romance, mystery and supernatural elements, and not really a comedy, even though it has plenty of funny scenes in it.

Thanks for the reply. I was a bit concerned. If the show was a comedy, i would've been a total idiot. Of course, I've noticed the funny scenes, but it never passed through my mind that this would be a comedy anime, so the comments cause a bit of a misunderstanding for me. Thanks.

Personally, I'd class Bakemonogatari as a comedy more than anything else, although it is hard to put it in one specific genre. It's just a very specific type of humour, most of which is language based, so it tends to lose a lot in translation, and isn't funny for everyone to begin with. Just the way the characters talk, how their dialogue is arranged, things like that are, not laugh out loud funny exactly (and not intended to be), but amusing. And there are a lot of subtle puns, references, and other jokes in there too which do not translate well. So I'd say that it's a comedy even outside the obvious funny bits which everyone gets. But it is a very strange show.

I got a lot of comedy out of it, I also love the story arcs!

I wouldn't call it a comedy per say. It's one of those rare breeds, an oxymoron... a dramatic comedy, that's a deconstruction of various genres/styles, most notably the harem.

It's definitely the most unusual (and greatest) SHAFT production I've ever seen. And yes, it's very weird

Oh no, I wouldn't really classify this anime as a comedy (I think SHAFT is its own category, in a sense

) I meant there were moments that I enjoyed in a comic fashion.

Downloading this right now. Art is like Arakawa under the Bridge. Understandably so since SHAFT did both of them.

Based on the previews it seems like a very strange show.

By book do you mean those texts that appear?
Actually had to open up VLC(hate it) and take a few screenshots to read them as i just couldn't stop the playback at the right time.

I think i'll buy the novel too if the anime isn't the complete adaptation of the novel.

Oh, no, the series isn't finished yet. What I meant was that Bakemonogatari is pretty much a complete adaptation of the Bakemonogatari novel - I don't think there's much content in the book that's not in the anime. They haven't adapted a lot of the books yet, and I don't think all the books have even been released yet in the first place.

And unless you can read Japanese, there's no point buying the novel (and you'd have to get it from a Japanese shop). Do you really think something like this would ever get an official English translation? One or two of the books are translated on Baka-tsuki, and that's about it.

According to AniDB Monogatari series includes the following titles.
Bakemonogatari
Nisemonogatari
Zenmonogatari
Kizumonogatari

Quite a few novels and series.
