MGZ's New PC
« on: July 07, 2009, 02:30:43 PM »
New PC ordered, tax refund paying for most of it

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129021 - Case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817379006 - PSU
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128332 - Mobo
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115036 - CPU
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118019 - CPU Fan
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121291 - Graphics Card x 2 - 1gb DDR5 HD4870 - Will be running in Crossfire
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829102021 - The PCI version of this card yanked from my old PC
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148301 - 500gb HDD x2
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136359 - 750gb HDD x1 (not sure how this got on my order but ill use it for something)

74gb Raptor Drive also yanked from my old PC
and 2 320gb drives and 2 500gb drives from it will probably throw the new 750 into the old PC and partition it so windows is on one chunk everything else on the rest

Everything except PSU will be here today,  Cry
i think i forgot to grab dvd burners so i will probably have to grab 2 of those

y ?
Its a solid cpu that overclocks well no need to waste the extra money to switch to nehalem and switch to ddr3

the performance difference from the Core i7 and DDR3 is worth the extra money

not for me its not the performance difference isnt a necessity in games or anything atm while it may be a note worthy increase in performance its just not NEEDED for the extra 100-200$ it will cost me to switch to the processor mobo and memory

Same lol... would've rather gone with AMD though way better processors for the price. AMD Phenom II X4 940 Deneb Black Edition: same price, Quad Core, 3.0GHz, more cache (overall), 125W... that's a win for me.

Q6600.

4 Cores are better than 2... But then to be honest I use my computer for computationally difficult things, not playing games.

i7 is about ePeen. Yep, you heard Naru.

I use an i7 at work sometimes, and to be honest it doesn't rock all that hardcore (yes I know a proper workstation would see significant benefits).

Meh, I'll probably wait a few months for the Core i7 to come down in price. I'd like one because it'd be great for video, but that's about it.

BTW, what were you upgrading from by way of comparison?

i7 is kinda cool... but it's not a rox your socks make you get chicken pox type of awesome.
* fohfoh uses one and built a server on it.... a waste.... i know... but not my comp.

ati and amd get along, and everyone and intel do as well.

There is no detrimental effects of using ati card with intel processors

and the e8500 is an awesome overclocked same basic ability as the q6600 but its a 45nm instead of 65nm which = awesome OCing most of the wolfdale processors are known for amazing OCing

Not bad imo.

Just two things I have stupid comments on.

1: I wouldn't have bought a soundblaster.   Their usefulness died as soon as half-ass onboard cards started appearing.   Of course, unless you do audio work/editing.

2: That case.   I'm NEVER going to buy myself a case with a speaker-grill front again.   Ever.   I loathe those cases so much.   They're like dust magnets that are a pain in the ass to clean, never have good airflow - thanks to 1 ton of dust stuck behind that damn grill.  Take a shop vac to that bastard, and it STILL doesn't get clean.   Cleaning those things out is a bitch.
Nothing.

I currently have this baby:

and it aint so bad. . .it does get really dusty. . .and I cleaned it like after a month. ..it has like little cloths . . .just water them and voila. but thats also because its in my dirty-carpet room.
keep it on regular tile or wood floor. shouldnt be dusty. . .
It has great airflow tho! Ive never seen any high tmps there. . .and when i put my hand on the back i feel nothing but cool air comming out.

Yours isn't nearly as bad as mine.

I have THIS:

http://img.tomshardware.com/us/2005/04/11/midi_towers/coolermaster_centurion-tota.jpg

and THIS:

http://mobilepcmedic.org/images/Coolermaster%20Elite_330.jpg

They suck so hard to clean.   Maybe pull those filters off and wash em with water - but I've got other cases where *pff* blow the air thru em and they're dust free.   Not these.

Nothing.

Ok, since AMD was mentioned, what do people think about this processor?

AMD Opteron 2346 HE Quad Core Processor Socket F 1.8GHZ Barcelona 2MB 55W 65NM

I was considering seeing if I could swap this thing into an old P4 (I have no idea what socket that p4 is so I don't know if I need to upgrade mobo and all that crap) and maybe use it for some crap gaming. (Maybe SC2/D3 is enough) and maybe some storage stuff.

All you have to do is study it out. Just study it out.
