Foreign(non-english/US) Movie Recommendations
« on: July 13, 2009, 08:22:27 AM »
Ive seen ALOT of movies. Most are the hollywood mainstream ones.
The last couple of years tho, ive seen some non english films, Funny enough some of them are the originals hollywood copy.

Id like to see more, so i figured i start a tread. Give some recommandations.

#1 : Ofelas / Pathfinder
Around the year 1000 AD warlike people, the so-called "tjuder", roam in northern Scandinavia. As they brutally kill a family in a remote area, including the parents and their little daughter, the families teenage son manages to escape..
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093668/

#2 : Max Manus / Man of war
The true story about one of the most brilliant saboteurs during World War II
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1029235/

#3 : Låt den rätte komma in / Let the right one in
Oscar, an overlooked and bullied boy, finds love and revenge through Eli, a beautiful but peculiar girl who turns out to be a vampire.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1139797/

#4 : La femme Nikita / Nikita
Convicted felon Nikita, instead of going to jail, is given a new identity and trained, stylishly, as a top secret spy/assassin.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100263/

Oh and let me save some people some time. We have all seen Battle Royale and Chan-wook Park's movies :)

Edit: Grabbing the second and third atm. Haven't seen any of them for some reason.

I feel like an asshole for being a Swede and recommending anything Bergman has done but Fanny and Alexander is really good.

Not a movie but a mini series and anyone from northern Europe should know about it but:
Riget
And of course:
Riget II
Just plain awesome.
US remake (shit): Kingdom Hospital

Edit 2:
Just check out the intro for Riget, gives me the creeps every time. Also a brilliant intro song :)

I could recommend some decent german movies that came out not so long ago

Krabat
movie based on a prussian legend about a black mill with a miller that teaches the black arts
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krabat_(film)

Lauras Stern / Laura's Star
animated movie based on a popular children's books series (just cuuuuuute)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laura's_Star

Anonyma - Eine Frau in Berlin/ A Woman in Berlin
set in past-war Berlin, rather disturbing story of how a woman tries to keep her dignity
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Woman_in_Berlin

Nordwand / North Face
dramatical movie about the first attempt to climb the Eiger North-Face
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Face_(film)

Watch some J-cinema. Some of it is quite good.

Boku no kanojo wa saibôgu  (Cyborg Girl)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0929860/

The only way to describe this movie is like forrest gump meets terminator in a romantic comedy. Heart touching and has a great ending, though the middle is somewhat slow. 8/10

Kataude mashin gâru (Machine Girl)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1050160/

Excellent mindless action flick with a surprisingly not horrible story line. It's a tad on the gory side, but oh so worth it.

Casshern
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0405821/

Another action flick done almost entirely in CGI like 300 was. Some parts of the movie are gorgeous. Not a bad flick at all. I'm awaiting the directors newest flick to come out on DVD, Goemon. It looks amazing as well.

Kisaragi
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1158278/

Absolutely hilarious movie with more twists then all of M. Night's films combined. Highly recommend.

Shinobi
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0475723/

Cool special effects/action flick that reminded me of a live action Ninja Scroll or Basilisk.

Ichi (NOT ichi the killer)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1060256/

I think Haruka Ayase is hot, so I watch most of her movies. This movie is a remake about a blind person who has amazing sword skills. In this remake, that person is a female. Good movie.

Death Note (live action)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0810827/

There are 3 films. The first one was on the boring side, the second one was great and skip the 3rd. As Light's not even in it.

Koizora
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1194664/

This movie will bring you to tears. In a good way I guess. It's based off a true story.

Uzumaki
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0244870/

Crazy ass horror movie. I liked it. Shit didn't start getting weird until about half way in though.

That's all I have time to type now. They're all good movies and I recommend them to everyone.

Toki o Kakeru Shoujo
Best animated movie in my opinion.

Piano no Mori - The Perfect World of Kai
Was also pretty good, if not spectacular.

End of movies I've liked more than series last ~8 years...

I second Machine Girl for pure guilty pleasure. I laughed through most of it. Another movie that's so bad it's good is Dead Snow. It's a about a bunch of Norwegians on vacation being slaughted by Nazi zombies. It's actually a (violent) comedy.

"After Life"
A fairly old Japanese movie I stumbled on when I was bored one night on Netflix. It's a mixture between a movie with a good plot and a documentary where real people with real stories talk about their past experiences in order to find their 'happiest moment' while they were alive. I was crying so hard I woke my roommate up.

Vengeance Trilogy - "Sympath for Mr Vengeance, Old Boy, Sympathy for Lady vengeance" in that order.

Memories of TOmorrow - Ken Watanabe. Same guy from the "Last Samurai" (He was the general who liked "having good conversations")

Erm... I can only really remember 1 movie I remember seeing that wasn't in english. Does it count that I've lived in Quebec for the past five years? XD

C.R.A.Z.Y. was pretty good. It's typical Quebecoise drama for you though. :X

Wow seriously not what I expected. It was a great film. And I don't even like child protagonists.
Swedish vampire movie on top 250? I'm really surprised.

Edit: American remake, or "readaptation", next year. Hehe figures ;)

BuriaL my friend, you have excellent taste so be sure to post more :)

I Watched Max Manus yesterday as well. It was also good but maybe a little too epic for my taste in Scandinavian films.
For more high budget Scandinavian films watch Arn - Tempelriddaren (Arn: The Knight Templar) - Not as good as Max Manus.

I'm a little hesitant on watching Ofelas as I'm scared it's like Hrafninn flýgu (When the Raven Flies) which to be honest wasn't that good (the sound effects).

I've seen Nikita before.

I decided to post a couple more.
Jägarna (The Hunters) - Excellent music (based on Puccini's Tosca) and scenery.
Ondskan (Evil) - Private boarding school movie, this one is really good and probably my favorite Swedish movie.
Spelling things correctly is neither grim nor necro. True and kvlt

I saw a Russian movie called The Other, which was very interesting.

It's kind of like Xmen... well.. no, not really. It's more closer to The Matrix, but without any cool technology, I suppose. but if you like The Matrix and X men this movie will probably fit your tastes.

Les Chevaliers du ciel. Made by the French. Its English title is 'Sky Fighters'. As you can guess, it's main focus is aviation.  :)

+1. Good shit

Also, Art of the devil 2 was a really good Thai film. It was a very decent horror movie. :)

Chanbara beauty was kind of funny as well, slightly lame since it's moreso fan service, but if you walk into that without expectations, it's kind of enjoyable.

There's also... machine girl(name?) or something along those lines. It's so overly ridiculous it's funny as hell. (Imagine Kill Bill as a comedy)
