Kinda looking for a soundcard upgrade for my computer. Considering I am still using some onboard crap that came with my asus p5n32-e SLI motherboard. Even though its high definition audio, the quality isnt that great.

So i narrowed my choices down to the

- Creative X-fi Titanium card series
- Asus Xonar D2X/XDT card

Now I plan on using them together with a logitech Z-5500 Digital box set and some high end headset that I havent decided on yet. Coaxial or optic.

I was wondering if anyone maybe have some experience with these cards. mainly since I am a gamer and EAX seems to be pretty impressive. I know the Xonar emulates it, with the latest drivers up to 5.0 and that the X-fi ofcourse supports it fully, but what im wondering about is, the differnce really that big when using EAX?

Just as a note, im also looking for good music/movie sound.

Considerations to keep in mind:

- Are you using headphones ( then don't bother. )
- Do you have a killer audio setup ( Not $100 speakers.  I'm talking a killer system.  Ok, you'll notice the difference - do get it. )
- Do you do encoding of any type?  ( You will be pleased. )
- Is this the one with the live drive?   See above question. ( If you answered no - you have near zero use for the Live Drive. )

I was just looking for "better sound" myself, and some improved performance - I got myself an X-Fi.

I was not happy - and I wished I put my $ into a video card.

Nothing.

yeah on the reviews I read, the asus definitly has better sound, but lacks the EAX support that Creative has. I cant comment on the drivers of the creative, but in the past they were pretty bad. Asus always has given me good drivers and support on there products.

Like I said in my original post, Im aiming for a logitech Z-5500 box set (5.1), it goes for around 230-400 euro's and is a high end audiophile set. As for the headphones, the Asus has a Amp jack for headphones thus combined with high quality headphones it should give you optimal sound.

I know it sounds like I already made up my mind, but i really cant choose. As a gamer I want good sound, performance and Eax, but im nto really missing eax right now and I dont know if it makes a great difference.

My buddy owns an a Creative Fatal1ty (whatever the one just below the most expensive one is), and I must say, even on a halfway decent speaker system (He had Logitech X-540s) you WILL notice a difference. It blew away his circa 2004 Creative 24 Bit Live! card. It is crisper, more vibrant, and EAX is always a really nice feature. He's a non-audiophile (unlike me), and he noticed it, so what does that tell you. I would say no to the Asus simply because I've recently had a bad experience with ASUS sound expansion cards, and I wouldn't be suprised if those problems went up to higher level cards. EAX does make a huge difference, you should definitely play it with it turned both on and off to hear what you are missing. A good example would be walking through a room with ambient sound, you'll hear the difference. (The first game I ever noticed the difference in was Star Wars: Battlefront 2 in the Death Star level.)

It really comes down to how much you want to pay. If you've got money to spend, and you must have the best, go with the Fatal1ty, you won't be disappointed if you're an audiophile. Otherwise spend the money somewhere else.

Don't get the Fatal1ty version even if you are going to buy a X-Fi Titanium. You don't want to pay $30 for that "EMI shield" or x-ram bullshit. In fact, don't buy anything that has "Fatal1ty" on it.

It's quite well known that the Asus Xonar series have excellent audio quality, however DS3D GX doen't work well with some games.
Also, the D2X does not have a separate headphone amp. The Essence STX does. the X-Fi based Auzentech Forte has one too.

If I were you I would get a Xonar DX or X-Fi Titanium, depending on how much you value Real EAX(TM).
edit: DX has a mail-in rebate ATM, so it's cheaper too. Disregard that it's US/CA only.

EAX is great and the X-Fi Crystalizer shouldn't be underestimated.

I personally have the X-Fi Fatality Pro Titanium and it's great.

The linear nature of your Euclidean geometry both confounds and befuddles me.

hate to break it to ya but there isnt much in speakers at 300$ price range(its just over 300 on newegg for those speakers)
that most audiophiles would consider high end while they are nice speakers, prices can be quite deceptive

I was wondering if you had any experience with its drivers? Like windows vista 64 bit, windows 7?

Also, does an EMI shield have such an advantage? The same card, X-Fi Titanium without the EMI shield and Fatal. Logo is about 80 bucks.

Whatever you do, just don't buy the low end X-Fi cards. My card still goes spastic on me, even after applying PCI latency fixes.

Great idea. Paid for a soundcard to get better sound then ruin everything with "Crystalizer"(aka another dsp that rapes your pre-raped music).

*nod*

The low end ones are all shit.

They rip the good bits of what makes a soundcard good (sound processors, adcs, cache, etc) - and turn it into a realtek with a soundblaster name on it.

I still wonder why they put this "fatal1ty" name on it.   I don't know, or care, who that asshole is.  :P

All I know is he perfected his gaming skills by developing callouses on his hands.   You know - above the palm, right where the fingers are attached.

No fool, not from using the mouse or keyboard too much - from FPS skill building exercises - astroglide/ky + porn.  The ol' one-handed bench press.

------------

BTW - Has anyone seen the guts or a pic of the guts of the X-Fi plat masturbation-master-gamer-dude edition?   I'm curious to see which has more guts & components that actually do something.

Hmm I guess the X-fi it is. As much as the xonar is better in sound by just a bit, Most of the movies and shit i watch will be streamed and rendered on the ps3 :) so its I guess purely for gaming and well I guess Creative wins in that.

I wouldn't say they completely win - or else I'd still be using them, and not have had dropped them ... after swearing by them for 10 years.   Shouldn't need to pay 3X the price to get some hardware processing.   They lost me when they released the Audigy (and all subsequent mutations) - that card was shit, IMO.   Before that - I had SBs all over the place - I had 4 FRICKING SB Lives (man that card was their best.   They haven't beaten that card in total kick-ass (performance & value) yet, IMO.   @Audigy - SB went downhill fast.)

Just avoid the "IO Drive" thing.  That's a waste of space & money IMO.

im gonna agree and disagree, their non retardedly expensive cards suffered badly in quality problems and driver issues on the audigy 2 and 4, the xfi low end models are the same cards more or less. Until you get into the ones with the XFI chips, the soundcards with the xfi chips are genuinely good sound cards.

And yes the external IO drive is a waste of life.  http://us.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=209&subcategory=669&product=16559
thats what im using and the front ports setup is quite nice they are really fucking people with the PCI-e version its front panel setup is garbage
