TEHRAN - Iran's sole Simorgh AWACS aircraft was lost during a military parade Sept. 22, one of two Iranian military aircraft that crashed in Tehran while participating in a display to mark the anniversary of the start of the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq War.
The Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force operated a single Simorgh, a former Iraqi Air Force Adnan. The Adnan AWACS was in turn a modification of a Soviet-built Ilyushin Il-76 transport.
The Simorgh collided with one of the Air Force's Northrop F-5E Tiger II fighters over the area of the Imam Khomeyni Shrine, southern Tehran. According to eyewitnesses, the crash occurred immediately after the parade. Apparently, no mayday call was issued.
Both aircraft crashed in flames. Initial reports indicate that seven crewmembers were killed in the crash.
In total, Iraq built three AWACS aircraft, one Baghdad, and two Baghdad-2s, the latter later renamed Adnans. One Adnan and the Baghdad were evacuated to Iran during the 1991 Gulf War, while the second Adnan was destroyed on the ground by a coalition air strike in January 1991.
The exact status of the Iranian Simorgh and its onboard systems was long uncertain. However, photographs suggest that the aircraft was equipped with a newly fitted functioning radar suite.
A fine piece of equipment it was too, during its prime. RIP

F-5 Crash, MiG-29 Fire at the 2009 Sacred Defense air show
(click to show/hide)In addition to the Il-76 tragedy, there were additional incidents that marred the 2009 Sacred Defense air show in Tehran.
Apparently, an IRIAF F-5F in the third flight group suffered a crash to the east of Tehran, seconds before it was to arrive at the parade location. The two-man air crew managed to eject from the stricken plane, but suffered broken legs. Flight leaders of the air groups requested the air show be scrubbed, but the parade commander ordered it continue. Still, nine of the fifteen participating F-14s en route from Isfahan (TFB-8) were granted permission to abort mission, so only six went on to take part in the show.
If that were not enough, an IRIAF MiG-29 caught fire upon its return to Mehrabad airport. Taxing to its park location, the right engine burst into flames, causing extensive damage to the plane's fuselage. The MiG-29's home base was Tabriz (TFB-2).
That makes for three serious incidents for the air show, one of them fatal, with two aircraft lost and one damaged. Not a good showing for the IRIAF.
15 Tomcat is pretty cool.

so your linking support to my statement that iran = retarded
darkjedi:
So, for example, every time a US plane crashes, the US = retarded also?
So much for an RIP. :'(
mgz:
wanna compare numbers, look up the # of flights ingoing outgoing from us on us planes, the number of flights and people flying on them. Compared to the number of people who die in them as a result of definitive failures that could have been prevented by maintenance
