Marvel anime TV series
« on: July 15, 2009, 11:58:51 PM »
Just found out about this here.
Why should you care? It's animated by Madhouse, and written by Warren Ellis. Can't say I like most of Marvel comics too much recently, but damn, that sounds promising.

Not a big fan of Marvel, but I know the stuff. Though slightly because I've seen the three X-Men movies and the one Iron Man. Which means no comic books with great background stories. Those two series should be totally worth seeing. And with a studio as Madhouse it's going to be even more worth seeing. It's just too bad we have to wait so long to see it.

That's what I don't like. Getting these tasty news in the face and seeing the number 2010.

Hmm madhouse does decent animation, almost 50% of their work is good, which is quite impressive...

Though since they only do the animation one can't blame them for bad series.

He does look like a guy who's capable of pulling off a good script/story. Either way, Marvel's stories have never been directly bad. I mean, they're still going strong, right?

Warren Ellis is one of my favorite western comic writers, and I was into comics way before I got interested in manga/anime. His Transmetropolitan is particularly well known, but he wrote a lot of good stuff. Planetary, Global Frequency, Authority, Nextwave, Fell, Desolation Jones, to name just a few. His writing outside comic book scripts is really good as well.
As for Marvel, well, I'm a bit behind on current stuff, having stopped reading as Civil War ended. It's not that their stuff is bad, but constant crossovers piss me off. Not that DC is any less guilty of that.
If only Ellis gets enough freedom to utilize his talent in full, there's nothing to worry about.

especially that last one...ill let it go un-named...

but the last animated one Hulk vs Wolverine was pretty damned good. if its anything like that it'll be a masterpiece.

Were they only doing one show, cuz I thought that I had initially heard something like 4 shows.  I think an Iron Man show for sure though.  Hopefully they will do Spiderman and X-men.  X-men would be really badass there's a lot of material that would be very promising as an anime.  I hope its kinda like the the ultimate universe though, new marvel has kinda gone off the deep end imo.

i hope its the damned civil war!
or some abstract marvel, like Deadpool or Cable.

I hope its kinda like the the ultimate universe though, new marvel has kinda gone off the deep end imo.

the ultimate universe would be the newer of the marvel series...
Un-canny X-men and Stan Lee's spider man would probably be the best.

i wouldn't mind seeing a Weapon-X or X Factor anime either if it was team style.

This could be extremely good or extremely bad...
As for Marvel,I love it...Especially the newer stories,Civil War,Planet Hulk,House of M etc...
I'm sure they'll make some story arc,or maybe they'll go on to something new...
Anyway, hope it'll not be a childish shit...like the new Spiderman or Batman:Brave and Bold...

But the new Spider-Man cartoon is awesome. It rapes every cartoon Marvel has ever produced.

Transmetropolitan is my favorite comic of all time. It almost made me want to be a journalist. His book wasn't bad either, but I didn't really care for Global Frequency.

Hehe,I've just seen 2 trailers of this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cY73YDWwCqc    -Wolverine
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFU-NobclCw&feature=related   -Ironman

Wolverine fails. He's supposed to be a beast, animal traits, devil hair, etc but he looks like a yaoi Dojinshi character also the Hand just sucks.Just goes to prove that you can't mix western comics with eastern animation.
They did a pretty good job with Ironman though the badguy he's fighting against is yaoish.I'm afraid too look under Ironman's mask  :D
Meah, besides the animation the presentation is a little over the top.Standing in front of a missile launcher and catching missiles with your hands is a little too japanase or maybe it's just the angle it was shown that's bothering me.
Anyway,I'm expecting it to be another Afrosamurai

I need to clarify something: those are only test animations. Those are NOT actual trailers.
They are meant to showcase the design and style(so Wolverine will probably still have the fabulous mullet in final work), but have nothing to do with the actual content. About Iron Man:
Quote from: Warren Ellis
Note test animation: it’s intended to show off the style of the piece only. Nothing in here reflects the actual content, just the design and the aesthetic and the animation. The only character in this piece that is in the actual series is Iron Man himself, okay?

Oh,I see and yet I don't.I can understand that there will be a different Wolverine but it will still look,in style at least, something like the test,no?
Btw,what do you think of them?

Anyway, searched the  post you were refering to and found this interesting:The story itself will be loosely based on the WOLVERINE miniseries by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller from the early 1980s.
I personally haven't read anything by Miller but I'm somewhat familiar with Claremont and his contribution to the creation of many strong female characters.

Iron Man looks promising, but I've already given up on Wolverine after seeing the picture of him. His character design is complete and utter shit. I'm afraid they'll somehow manage to make Tony Stark look awful as well.

Not sure if I'd call either an 'anime' though. Being animated in Japan, or by a Japanese production company satisfies one tenant of the definition, but does not satisfy much else.

From what I gathered from the article:

Seems like their goals are twofold. One, export American properties into Japan since their movies do so well there, there is definitely interest. Secondly, to 'anime up' or 'modernize' their own current properties here for American audiences.

It would be like Disney agreeing to animate a new Naruto with a western flair. I guess it's arguable, but on another news site, I read that marvel wanted 'a mix between japanese and western animation styles'. And madhouse agreed.

I guess I'm just a purist. :P I (personally) wouldn't call this an anime. I call it a novelty.

Novelty is a good word for it. But if Warren Ellis is writing it, then it could turn out to be decent.

The version of Wolverine would have been great, only that it is linked to the actual Wolverine...
And if I remember corectly when did Wolverine got a pony tail attached to his head? And wasn't his hair black?
I didn't understand one thing...who are the villans?Hope they'll do something cool with 'em...
And if Madhouse would have be given permision to do anything, maybe we would had the chance to see the real Wolverin, the one from comics and "Hulk vs".
