An anime that hit alittle to close to home.
« on: July 18, 2009, 08:32:16 AM »
This post will contain indirect spoilers for toradora, read on at your own discretion.

I usually do not like this genre of anime, in fact, im not even sure how or when i downloaded it. I stumbled across it on my hd and i was bored so i gave it a look.
I have to say, it is by far the best anime of its type, and one of the very few romantic comedies that i have enjoyed.

Back to the point, About 2 years ago, a new employee started at my work.
It was not long before we were spending most of our time together.
I learned that she had packed up and moved alone from washington to utah in an attempt to get away from an abusive relationship.
About 6months after we met, she came in to work and gave me a hug which seemed to last forever. With out saying a word, I thought something was up, but i didnt say anything.
The next day my friend told me he had given her a ride to the airport to go back home.
She never said a word to me about it, unlike toradora, I never saw her again.

At the end when taiga left, It hit so close to home i have been depressed for the last few days for only the second time in my life. The first time being the weeks after I found out she left.

Anyway, enough rambling, if you have passed over toradora i would highly rec. it. It is well worth the time to watch :)
And yes, when i first read the name I was thinking it sounded really dumb and childish. But its not :D

Has anyone else had a real emotional impact from an anime before?

pps: I hate the new website name... could you possibly have been more generic?

No offense but when you're talking about Toradora, why not in the appropriate topic?

The mods already said no.

I knew nothing of the outside world. I was just a frog in a well.

I guess the point of the thread was lost in my ramblings.

I was asking if anyone else has had an anime impact their lives, and not just a form of entertainment.

I expected that Toradora would be extremely popular as the series ended, but even still think it's under-rated.  Toradora is a show that I can show to non-otakus, which I did and they quite enjoyed it.

It was great how it handled some real life problems near the end.  I too ran away from home when I was young.  And for silly reasons, like thinking it would be better on my own.  The words used that hurt his mother touched close to home too.

A recent series that brought not so good memories is Kanememo.  It's a comedic slice of life show.  But they work delivering papers.  I used to do that and hated it.  Took the job on my own, and with it being the first, think I kept at it so not to be a quitter.  Made extra spending money, but so not worth it.

btw, I swear it seems that third of the posters have turned into mods, and the other third are wannabees.

i enjoyed toradora, had one of the greatest lines ever, outside of TTGL that is,
(click to show/hide)
but my mistake was marathoning the entire series at a LAN with a friend,
all the eps rolled into one and i forgot most things.
im gonna watch school days then watch toradora again...

I do that alot :(

I try to watch 3 a day, but i always end up getting sucked into a 6am marathon 20+ episode run.
Maybe I should go back and rewatch a few shows that ive done that one.

Well I guess I can add to the topic, clannd AS didn't exactly have an impact but one of Tomoya's monologue did call out to me in a sense as I completely understood and related to it. Ah but the monologue at hand, oh what could it have been, I'll leave that part out.

As far as I can remember I haven't been "deeply impacted" by an anime hitting close to home, but there was a Japanese girl I was really into once that was a lot like Hachi from NANA and watching NANA was like watching some of my own bittersweet memories. >.< If I hadn't met that girl before I would've never sat and marathoned the overkill drama-faced drama in NANA. :D

Well, the first anime I ever watched naturally "hit close to home" for me, in that it got me into the world of anime in the first place (Onegai Teacher, dubbed, on youtube).

The first fansub I watched, which was also the second anime I ever watched, Ai Yori Aoshi, also got to me, because it was a bit of a deeper story than the first one, so it had me thinking about it a lot for a few weeks.

Another one that really got to me was School Days. I will never look at relationships between people the same way again.

this is going to sound stupid, but Fate/Stay Night was pretty helpful to me. After seeing the way Shirou acted through that series I began to realize how angry and selfish I was being towards everyone around me. Shiou inspired me to be more selfless and begin thinking of others over myself. I'm always on the lookout now for things I can do to help people.

There is no single anime that has gotten to me like that, but overall I can definitely say i take things less seriously, and im alot less selfish since i started watching anime.
I didnt really realize how rude i was being at times to other people, until recently.

I'm still alot more lazy, and selfish then i should be though... maybe someday i can get over that.

Agree. We will take them out the back of the shed and shoot them. Cleanse the world of these people.

When i first looked at this thread name i thought it was about what anime has most closely resembled a part of life since as kenpa007 said this has been done.

Strangely enough, the first anime I watched that really "hit close to home" was Kiddy Grade.  I was several years into a long term debilitating illness at the time, where I was in constant daily pain.  When I watched the episode where Éclair tells Lumière that she just wants to die, and Lumière tells her that she can't, it reminded me of myself and my wife so much that I just broke down into tears in the middle of the show.
