Saki
« on: July 22, 2009, 02:44:41 AM »
Just watched the first episode and it seems pretty good! despite the fact that i dont have any clue whats really going on.
mahjong is to damn complex. All i can figure out it is (from the helpful mahjong jargon helper in the sub i got) that the main character can keep a score of +/- zero which in mahjong is damn near impossible and its easier to gain points then to keep zero the whole time. especially when they play with shorter rounds.

its a pretty interesting show. if i wasn't busy learning poker (winning moneys!) i'd try to find some people to learn mahjong with.

oh yeah and the lesbian undertones make the show extra interesting.
tatsujin thx!!( for nothin! ) thanks Sebur for the SIG!

What's Saki all about? Never heard of it.

:P

I like it a lot so far. Though, the later episodes are kinda dragging on a bit. I'm hoping this tournament comes to a close in the next episode.

Slice of life, like Lucky Star and Miname-ke.

Slice of life?

It's Dragonball Z but with mahjong and boobs.

Moeblobs playing mahjong, complete with the fanservice one'd expect. I'm ashamed to admit I watch it ;)

Slice of life my ass.

Think hikaru no go stripped of all authenticity, replace every character with a moe moe lesbian, add in levelling and ridiculous avatar battles, subtract all panties, especially from the lolis, and suddenly remember it's about a board game just in time for the standard tournament arc.

It's a complete mess, but it's fun.  Much like strike witches before it.

This is a much better summary than slice of life. It is basically a fan service series that just happen to take place around mah-jong (whose rules you don't need to know).

Wow, this sounds even better than I had thought it was... Lesbian moeblob fanservice, that just happens to take place around mah-jong? Sounds like a blast.
I'll add this to my list with "keep thinking about this until it finishes airing" status, and then I'll probably add it to my shortlist in a "fun" anime slot.

You're all a mess. I'm not understanding what's going on. Saki is NOT slice of life? Is it a board-sort of game? What is it then.

are you sure its not just slice of life+confusing mahjong+fanservice = Saki ?

it doesn't seem to be teeming with fan service like ikki tousen was.

it seems like Mild fanservice to me

It has a plot with clear progression toward the completion of a story arc.

It doesn't matter that it's ridiculous.  Slice of life doesn't have story arcs or plot progression, just character development.

Anyone who claims to be watching this for the mahjong battles is either asexual or seriously having priority issues.

If you weren't aware of the yuri undertone from watching the show alone, the OP (I think even both) makes it blatantly clear, not to mention the alternative ED that comes up every now and then.

If there exists a school where the girls wear extremely short skirts and no panties, let me know so I can move there.

The mahjong just serves as temporary distraction from the fanservice overload.

Slice of life is charaterised mainly by the lack of plot continuity, lack of character development (or, when it occurs, it's segmented) as well as a general lack of exposition and conflict (and subsequently often lacks an "ending"). In essence, it consists of loose parts of the casts lives that may or may not be linked. Saki isn't slice of life.

it doesn't seem to be teeming with fan service like ikki tousen was.

The entire show is fraught with fanservice, ranging from the character designs (a menagerie of moeblobs, basically) to skirt shots and the general yuri theme.

Yup, it's on my list now! As soon as it finishes, I'm going to dig very hard into it ... extremely hard.
