Still running XP?
« on: July 22, 2009, 09:56:35 AM »
This is a question to all XP users:

Why do you still have that OS? Why haven't you changed to Vista? Because of a shitty computer? Because of money? Because of all the things you can't do on Vista while you can do that on XP? Because you wouldn't be able to play 720p/1080p encodes? Because you don't like Vista? Because of User Account Control (UAC)?

I'm curious as to people's reasons why they haven't changed yet, people have different computers and different opinions. Just wondering about how many there is in the same boat as me.  ;)

For me it's a bit of everything, I can't play 720p when I change to Vista even with CoreAVC. I can't use some of my programs, my computer runs too slow and I would have to install very little for the same performance on a Vista that I have on XP. Though mind you, if I had a good computer and my programs worked then I would change because there's so much more functions on a Vista. And seeing as I'm not a gamer, it doesn't mean that much to me, as long as my emulator works. And thing I do is play CS frequently. The interface is so much smother, and I'm sure W7 is even smother in the final version (have tried RC1).

But for me, I think it's a matter of:

1) When Microsoft turn off their support/windows update for XP
2) When my laptop turns dead (it said that right away when I tried to install Vista through the harddrive check)

Until then I'll stay with my beloved XP.  ;D

Shitty computer is shitty.First of all,I have 1 GB of DDRRAM-enough to run it,not enough run it smoothly.Second, the RAM is faulty and I can't install Vista.I really can't.The installation fails.Same with windows 7,ubuntu or anything newer than XP.
Also,I don't like Vista.I've tried it when it came out.At that time there were only a few applications that were designed for Vista so I quit after 3 days.
Plus,I'm comfortable with XP.You don't abandon your old friend just because you find out he's gay.(though I did that with win 98...)

Because I can't find a good reason to install Vista instead, and because I don't want to wrangle with beta issues in Win 7. This machine came with XP, which has served me well so far. No reason to shell out money for a new OS (yes, I'm aware there's *free* Vista out there, wrangling with WGA cracks etc isn't my hobby though).

I'd much rather get *nix on this aging tablet of course, but when you're studying in a university where students are still largely using Windows-based systems, sticking with XP actually makes sense.

Actually, it should be Windows 7, which is Azure or whatever? That > Vista + XP.

And yes, Vista is 10 x better than XP, but sucks so much out of your hardware (specially the RAM). I'm on my 6th months of using Vista, I rarely restart Vista (run it 24/7, restart once every 1-2 months and as much as 3 months) and 0 errors ever since then. Vista is so stable, I'm in love with it. And Windows 7 is better, to what I hear, so I am switching to it next year around Jan or Feb.

Many of friends already use vista, and I have it for free because of college... however I didnt really see any improvement that would make me install it. I will however install w7 as soon as 64 bit drivers for my GPU come out and, as a test phase, will make a partition for it. If the improvement from xp isnt that great i'll just wait for them to drop support... I mean xp does everything that I need and it's been ages since it last crashed... IMO Os's are all about reliability these days, security is also an issue however most deal well with it.

Why would I waste money to vista now when I'll end up upgrading to windows 7 soon enough anyway...

I'd still be running XP if the damn thing would update.  I was forced into Vista and I don't like it.  Win7 can't come soon enough.  I alos heard Google was working on an OS which would kick ass.

I could easily run Vista, but when It came out I heard a lot of bad things as well as not having the crazy amount of money for it. XP currently does just about everything and more that Vista can do (at least in the field of stuff I do to it) so switching didn't make a whole lot of sense. I started wishing for Vista a few months back just because I started feeling left out, but Windows 7 is on the way now so I'll try to hold off and buy a new computer stocked with W7 when it comes out and kill 2 birds with one stone.

The reason I still run XP is that Vista would cost
me quite a bit to buy and it doesn't come with
anything I really want that XP doesn't have.

It hogs more resources (I still think that's an issue
although the computer's more than powerful
enough to handle Vista), the eyecandy isn't fun
for more than a day or so and the only thing
Vista can do that XP can't is DX 10+.

Microsoft themselves not liking Vista much isn't
helping either, really.

I have no reason to switch to vista. I ran it for two weeks when it first came out, then I switched back. It simply didn't feel better, it has to be better to justify spending money on it and losing computer performance.

My computer can run it just fine, 3.0 c2d, 4 gig ram...

Then there is the reason that switching OS is a pain, you have to reinstall and so on. The vista install with all patches and SP takes much longer than the same for windows xp x64. Unless I pre download the SP, then it is about the same.

Then there are the downsides to vista, UAC (have to turn that off directly), even more focus on personalized parts of the computer (a real pain when un-installing) and others that I can't recall just now.

Only things vista has going over XP is more games for free and dx 10, which most games aren't made for in any case.

My mom's computer is still running Windows XP because if I installed Vista on it, it would run dreadfully slow. The videocard doesn't support Aero Glass, and it only has a Pentium 4 2.4Ghz and 1GB DDR ram.

My brother's computer came with Vista on it and it ran horribly slow because of the 1GB of ram installed. I decided to put XP on it and add another 1GB stick of ram to it, and XP runs perfectly.

My laptop has an Intel Pentium Dual Core 1.8Ghz with 1.5GB of RAM. It came with Vista Home Premium and it ran pretty slowly and was constantly crashing, so I put XP on it and it ran like silk. I've since installed Windows 7 RC1 on it and it still runs better than Vista did, but XP still ran better on it.

So to sum things up, reasons I still run XP: a) computer doesn't support it and b) I just don't like Vista.

I'll probably switch over to windows 7 the next time I upgrade my computer, just for direct x 10 support. :/

http://www.techmixer.com/download-directx-10-for-windows-xp/ though if things like this continue onwards until I can reliably use them I might stick with XP another generation. :)

I resisted Vista for a long time because "Vista sucks." I ran the first leaked beta of Windows 7, and I loved it. When the first real 7 beta came out it hated my network card, but at this point I really didn't want to go back to XP. I got a Vista disk from a co-worker for free. He didn't want it because "Vista sucks." After turning off stupid UAC, removing the wall of text from the start menu, and turning off stupid restore points, Vista is great. I love it, and I'll never go back to XP. Everything is smoother, faster, and much more responsive. I don't have to reboot after every little update, and running more than one or two torrents doesn't bring my computer to it's knees. Vista is worlds better than XP.

It dropped me to busy box or something.I managed to install ubuntu on my other pc,one even crappier 256 SDRam,gefore 2 400 mx,900 Mhz duron without any problems.I stopped using command lines when I switched to win 95.I'm not going to try to learn how to install ,if it's even possible on my computer, ubuntu ,or any other OS,without a GUI.
So yeah,XP cause it's the only one that works  ;D

This one's easy. I use XP because it works and works well for my current needs. I have this policy not to use an MS OS until the first service pack has been released for a year. I see Windows 7 as an OS to toy around since it's just in beta/RC stage. I skipped Vista because MS seems to fuck up every other release of their OS. 98 -> 98SE -> ME -> XP -> Vista -> 7. Microsoft's next OS after 7 will probably be fucked up too. ;)

i have XP and windows 7 RC 64 bit, xp i use cuz i paid 130$ for it and it still works, if it aint broke dont fix it, updating it not terribly nesecary as if your not an idiot most of the security flaws in an OS arent that big of a deal to your average user.

It is more stable then my W7 RC, seeing as i left my windows 7 comp on overnight 1 night it was off the next morning and apparently windows had randomly corrupted, i had nothing but drivers and wow, and like firefox and winrar and thats about it oh and CCCP

My XP computer ran for literally 6 or 8 months no problems in stability or anything only reason it got shutdown was power failures or video card driver updates
