I use XP on my older machines (+3 years) but if they were upgradeable to a dual core processor,
I would install vista in a heartbeat.

Hah - that sums it up in a nutshell.

My needs - I've got systems all maxed out at 2gb ram.   Why not vista?  Because vista's crappy, unstable, sucks, breaks my programs, breaks my custom applications.

I see no features I can use, I see no features I want.   MS wasted their time on Aero - and left the whole OS behind.   Leave the eyecandy, bells, and whistles for the third parties - like Stardock - and focus on doing what they should be doing - making a damn OS.

I was also very slow to adopt XP - I waited till SP1.   Yeah, same thing as lupin up there - bugfixes, patches, security fixes.

I'm not going to be MS's guinea pig.  Let someone else do that.

Meanwhile, I found a great use for Vista - I can get an upgrade to Win7 instead of full version.   Isn't that great?    I'm Glad I hung on to my copy of Fail-OS.   Buy one copy, pirate the rest.   ( What, do you think you should pay for shit?   If you really want shit, poop in a bag instead of the toilet.   Just because someone charges for it doesn't make it worth paying for.  Bastards. )
Nothing.

I'm the same as everyone else was using xp and only reason I upped to vista was got 4gb ram for like 15bucks and found vista 64 ultimate for free. When win7 beta came out I dropped vista so fast that I don't even want to look back.

I dunno. I paid 50 bucks for Windows 7. To me, that's worth it. Vista sucks, but then again, I never paid for such a fail OS, and I knew it was while I was running it.

Windows 7, on the other hand, is worth paying for. XP is way the heck outmoded, anyway. I go back to it and think "Wow, where is all the features?"

Quite simply: I had to. I don't have any ethernet plugs in my house, so if I wanted a 24/7 seedbox, I'd have to go wireless; and the only way I knew of to get my Wi-Fi USB to work was to upgrade (that's right- UPgrade) to XP. I'm not using upgrade a a derogatory term for Vista either, the machine has been running Win98 for a decade. Yeah, my seed box is 12 years old and running XP. Very well I might add. Currently I've got 290 active torrents in utorrent, 9 tabs in Firefox, 3 explorer windows, Excel, and Windows Media Player running (with a library of 6900 files). Runs quiet as mouse too. I wish I could say the same for my laptop. ;)

System:
Windows XP v2002 SP3
Pentium II processor, 398 MHz
512MB RAM
Drive A:\ 3 1/2" floppy ftw
Drive C:\ HD-120GB external (portable) storage
Drive D:\ Compaq CD/DVD combo
Drive E:\ HD-9.4GB (system drive)
Drive F:\ HD-500GB seed storage
Drive G:\ Lite-On CD-RW
USB ports:
2x1.1
5x2.0 (PCI)

Vista 64 runs well on my core 2 quad, but there are still way too many annoyances. And performance issues to use it on a notebook or 32bit desktop.

Well, that was not my intention, this was meant to display everyone's reasons why they haven't changed.

I haven't upgraded from XP because I haven't seen any pressing need to. Plus, I heard all the random horror stories about Vista, and felt that any possible benefits weren't worth the risk. I've still got a 4-year-old PC with a mere 512MB RAM,* so I doubt it could handle Vista anyway. I tend to operate on inertia like that... I ran Windows 98 on my old PC from the day I got it in September 2000 until the day it died in March 2005. I'll get Windows 7 when I upgrade my system in a few years.

*Which I have tried to upgrade, but the RAM I bought after meticulous research would not physically fit in the slot. I haven't attempted upgrading it since then, as my philosophy is "If I've screwed something up once, I'll probably screw it up again, so I may as well not bother trying."

Got any old fansubs on HDD/DVD/CD? Please take a look at this thread.

Windows Vista "Do you want to do that? Are you SURE you want to do that?!"

In the 6 months I used Vista that pissed me the hell off. Waiting for Windows 7 to get a proper release then reformatting my laptop to that. Not that it gets used much anyway, as my primary machine is a Mac xD

I had never intended to use Vista, but since it came installed on my laptop I decided to give it a shot - I booted the computer, plugged in my USB keyboard (made by Microsoft mind you), and my Logitech trackball .... and it didn't fucking recognize them. I expected to have some hardware problems, maybe with the wireless card, video card, etc. - but no plug-n-play with a keyboard and mouse? Really?

After that I returned to my original plan of triple booting with Linux Mint, Fedora, and XP. As of right now I only actually boot into XP to play games, or sync my stupid Zune. Other than that I just run XP in VirtualBox so I can use ChemDraw with Microsoft Office; unfortunately the ChemDraw plugin doesn't work with OpenOffice  :(

... if only there was an acceptable ChemDraw alternative for Linux *sigh*

Forget Vista altogether. W7 has been surpringly rock solid for me, even after the XP->vista->w7 upgrade route. I'm not one to advocate m$ usually, but w7 is worth trying more-so than vista *bleh

edit: and fast very very fast

I kept getting BSOD with Win7 but I'm still advocating it. I think it's just an issue with my turbo cache laptop. The heat issues might contribute to it as well.

But I had vista die on me literally like 3 times. After the third time, I just said "fuck it" and went to Linux where I was happy for a few months till I got my hands on Win7 beta and happily dual booted until now.
This is your home now. So take advantage of everything here, except me.

You can very easily turn off the UAC. It's the first thing I did in Vista. I even figured out how to do it during the betas when Vista was so new you couldn't just Google it.

I hope that's a typo. If you paid for Windows 7 you got screwed.

When I built my desktop, Vista had been out for about a year, so it wasn't really that stable.  Now, I haven't upgraded, because I have no need to; all I use XP for is testing Windows applications.  Also, I refuse to put more than a gig stick in either of my primary computers, and if I can't run a version of Windows in a virtual machine without using swap space, then I don't want to use it.

My new computer came with Vista. Haven't had serious issues. Disable UAC and you don't have to deal with those annoying popups asking to double confirm every action you take. Stability-wise... it's worked the entire time it's been on. I haven't had anything I can remember not run on Vista either. There are some minor annoyances here and there, but not something that puts XP far above it.

XP here,  I only moved from Win2000 about a year ago.

I'll probably go to windows-7 for 64 bit soonish.

Vista sucks monkey balls. And for the record, if you say vista rocks, you are embaressing yourself.

Why? Even with XP you'll see noticeable speed gains with more memory.

Lemme know when you are able to run that under Winblows ;)
