well, if Anidb would start to show if the serie/OVA/movie/hentai is licensed by ADV/FUNi/CPM, I would say I dont need ANN anymore :S

Ok, I've been using ANN for info all this while, but looking at what they're using for background advertisement currently, I think I'm going to boycott them for a month or so.

Nothing personal against them, but I really like my eyes cancer-free >_>

ANN is a good site for gathering a lot of information about an anime. It has the most info about each anime, such as director, voice actors, episode directors, producers, etc. Their inner workings are bad, such as their sources and stuff, but their product is great for the more-than-obsessed anime fan.

anidb is a fairly bad site. It has a lot less info that ann, and it has a rating system that has a good amount of bias based off of group names instead of the actual quality of the episodes.

MAL is the worst site. It gives nearly no info, and it's rating system is hilarious, since it's anonymous comments.

You read the first post yet or did you skip through it? ANN is horrible enough with all their copy-re-word and paste sources, let alone their against fansubbers. If you wanna talk about rating, AniDB is a good rating site. If you wanna talk about producers, staff, etc. Both MAL and AniDB > ANN. Isn't there another site that's like those two?

What's that website again that always forms a big calendar (with black background) and shows all anime releases each season? I usually follow that and mostly hit AniDB's calendar as it is the best to look over and see what's coming out.

What makes you say that? I've used MAL many, many times to look up characters, voice actors, staff, producers, and other anime information. I like it especially for seeing the voice actors for characters and cross referencing the actors with their other characters. It even includes the English cast (not that I look at it though), and pictures of the staff when available. Perhaps I'm missing something to this argument....

Are you saying this because people vote lowly of your group? Does AniDB really has less info? Or does ANN has less? People base their votes off the reputation of a group, just like every other poll.

It depends on what info you are looking for.

For people interested in R1 news/releases, ANN is very useful

For people interested in Fansubs, AniDB is the way to go.

It depends on what info you are looking for.

For people interested in R1 news/releases, ANN is very useful

For people interested in Fansubs, AniDB is the way to go.

Honestly another great thing about AniDB is showing what Fansubs have released, they don't show ALL fansubs (which is something needs to be worked on unless if I am missing something). Does ANN show who subbed what and what they completed?! Sure they've got a lot of information about the staff and producers behind anime, but so does AniDB and MAL, plus the fact that both AniDB and MAL supports character descriptions, relations, relateds, etc.

Edit -- Just wanted to say I don't look at fansub ratings, they are using their free time to translate, time, edit, karaoke, encode, etc. to release anime to their fans. Chihiro is among the best right now so yea. I favor Chihiro among other fansubs out there for the past two seasons (almost 3). I used to always go for Frostii over Chihiro, but now its 1st come 1st serve since Chihiro pulled their weight.

AniDB has its flaws. It depends heavily on its users to improve its database. For example, I had to add this to the database last week because nobody added them yet despite being around for three months.

At least AniDB doesn't tout itself as the "Internet's Most Trusted Anime Databse"

Lupin, no, I'm not. I'm saying it because when I make an offer and need info, I get pretty much all of it from ANN. anidb I can get like the bare bones, and then that's it.

anidb is the best site to get info on the fansub releases, but it is so heavily biased. Like, Eclipse's Hayate has a rating of 8.74. I'd expect the release to be absolutely perfect in every way for that type of a rating. Instead, I spotted a few typos, some grammar errors, and things typical in like a 7.0 - 7.5 rating. Heck, season two they got a 8.75 and made a typo within the first three minutes (http://www.chihiro-subs.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/samescript.jpg, line 14 on the right.)

You naturally know about the anti-chihiro bias on anidb, such as how the Minami-ke Okaeri started as a 7.4 and dropped to a 6.3 over the season, even though there was no drop in subbing quality, or how Asu no Yoichi dropped 1.5 points (From 7.5 to 6.0) when we actually improved quality as we went on.

Anyways... /tangent on that.

MAL is worse. Just see http://www.chihiro-subs.com/2009/04/23/asura-cryin-03-released/ . LOL. XD

OK... as for the info they have, MAL is better than anidb in the amount of info supplied about the show, but it failed me yesterday when I was trying to find the voice actor for a minor role I liked in a series.

Yeah, I know about that. That's why I don't vote. Good groups are overrated. I still don't know how downvoting a group cancels out the perfect 10s it got from others. The vote calculations aren't based on averages in the first place.

I know the anti-Chihiro bias but I don't think you should blame that on AniDB. More likely, it resulted from the bad name you got from your older releases. It's like that example you made with Eclipse. They have great reputation coupled with decent (at the very least) subs released in a timely manner. The name alone can produce high votes. Just continue improving. Your latest projects are gaining higher votes now right?

The votes are just numbers coming a few hundred people, probably less than 1% of the total people watching a group's subs.

Well, ratings are improving slightly, but not at a rate they should be. *Shrugs*

Fansub ratings based off of anything other than comments about what was right/wrong about a sub are stupid.

l just browsed through ANN website, checked a few things, here is my honest opinion:

in terms of information provided, it's not bad, a lot of good info, but in terms of site structure, my eyes hurt, they cry, seriously, l've seen many badly structured sites, and ANN is one of them, too much garbage makes it trash site.

still information found on it is good, so my overall rating of that site is at best 4-

Kristen, you should ignore the ratings. Honestly, if you do focus on ratings or if you give them your attention then you'll most likely lose your goal ... which is fansubbing. I mean, I know there are groups (a whole bunch of them) combat each other to see who is better than who. I honestly don't think Eclipse is TEH BESTTH out there. I just like them because of their pure animation and encoding (smooth videos) their translation is at its best (of course they leave out some minor things I always tend to pick up on), rather, a lot of fansubs do that. I honestly think you should just ignore it, you guys as Chihiro improved a lot so you're getting a lot of vouches from us. You should be proud of that, I mean a lot of people are noticing you guys are a speed quality subs (was it?). I'm not gonna watch something from DarkSubs or whomever they're called, they're extremely horrible to what I heard. Just don't look at the rates, rather focus on how to improve. Management level if you know what I mean ;]

I think I'm gonna make a Chihiro cheerleading banner now. Lol.

If one can't reliably judge fansub quality based on group ratings, how can one find the best release without playing the first episode from 4564367 different subbers?

Comments. While some of the comments are useless, a lot seems to point out something about the video/audio/subtitle quality of a certain sub.

Reputation. A group's reputation, while not a very reliable measure, can give you an idea of what groups to choose from. It reduces the number of groups to choose from by a considerable amount.

the one that takes the smallest of the screen and allows you to easily follow the story, wich Chihiro does allow you really well

comments and popularity, this is how l measure this :
search on one site and l see a few versions done by a few subbers groups, l look at Seed/Peer, the higher one is more popular meaning it's better, the usually easiest way to settle things.

also remember that Hentai subbers don't do a really good work, tough there are exceptions (BB,Discipline)

as lupin said while about 1/5 of the comments are absolutely useless a large amount of them are useful for judging a episode or episodes from groups and usually there is updates like Group X did shitty for eps 1-3 and improved their quality greatly from epis 4-8 and continued to do so through the end of the series.

ANN has the most detailed information about anime production, cast and staff, by a huge margin. That is a fact. As long as any one site doesn't catch up to them, I'll be using ANN.
Only thing I use AniDB for is who subbed how many episodes of what - it's the best source for that.
I also use MAL, mostly for, as the name implies, a list of my anime(and manga). Its use as a database is limited, at best.
