File sharing software
« on: July 28, 2009, 01:38:25 PM »
Iam looking for a program to share files via lan, and with people i know online.
Msn wont send archive files like rar and zip, and it wont send videos. And msn seems slow anyways.

I want a program thats user friendly, simple and dont do stuff its not told (a bunch of programs tries to contact microsoft and shit "for no apparent reason").

Maybe i can use torrent programs for this? If so, how?

If you're sharing over LAN, just use normal network transfer.

Over the net, emulate a LAN connection with Hamachi.

in your local network you could simply set up a folder to share (i'm deducting you are using windows from your program choice)
for personal file sharing over the net i'm using irc - but more because it is running anyway and pretty easy to handle.

If it's you sharing what you have with others, just use a FTP server; quick, easy and lightweight. Aside from setting up accounts and configuring the program, you don't have to do anything once it's running. If you want to go with the LAN/VPN route (or FTP isn't a viable solution for some reason), psyren's idea works too.

I recommend Hamachi as well.

Many larger lans set up a DC++ hub to share files, might be worth looking into.
