Kanon 2002 versus 2006
« on: August 05, 2009, 10:51:55 AM »
I used the search function and could not find any discussion about the topic. Tried to use Google but all that I could find tend to either be spoilerific or not bring any significant information so I gave up.

From what I understand, Kanon 2006 is the remake of Kanon 2002 with better character design and animation. Other than that, is there any significant difference between the two in terms of story line or significant downgrades in the 2006 version (worse voice actors, soundtrack, etc.)?

Hmmm... maybe a better question would be, "Is there any good reason to watch 2002 before watching 2006?"

I haven't watched Kanon 2002 yet (the animation scares me) although I'm a big fan of the 2006 version.
From what I've heard though besides the animation the story in 2002 progresses a lot faster (wich should be a given since the remake has twice the episodes).

Yeah, that's basically the case. I've seen both. I prefer 2006 version as the 02 version is a bit more condensed.

If you want to watch the 2002 since its ... crap with holes. Then watch the 2006 version. Otherwise, you'll be disappointed if you watch 2006 first before 2002.

It's the same with Clannad. First there were the movies with a ridiculous high pacing and then our beloved studio got the rights and made marvelous series out of the games!

In case of Kanon I only watched the series and in case of Clannad I watched the first season, then the movie, got scared of what would happen in the second season due to the movie and got rewarded for watching the second season after all :D

I knew nothing of the outside world. I was just a frog in a well.

hehe, I guess that's clear enough. Just got to find a Kanon 2006 torrent. Thanks for the quick replies.

Anyone suggests a specific fansub group?

Anyone suggests a specific fansub group?

a.f.k and SS-Eclipse are both good groups and are pretty much on par with quality here from what I've heard so either of those should be fine. I personally watched with a.f.k's subs.

Go with SS-Eclipse, their torrents are always up even if it's licensed. <3 Eclipse.

AQS was very good on this too.

But regarding Kanon 2002. Basically, you can think of Toei's KEY adaptations as inferior to KyoAni's, with crap art and too much skipped out.

This would be the best reason I can think of to watch '02 first. If you want to experience the story for the first time with better animation, you won't be missing anything by skipping '02 entirely. Although in my experience, the emotional impact wasn't lessened any by knowing what was coming. The Japanese voice actor casts in both seasons are exactly the same, aside from the lead male role of Yuuichi Aizawa being replaced with Tomokazu "Kyon" Sugita. Soundtracks... they both use music from the game, remixed to some extent. I kind of liked '02's OP/ED more -- they were a better fit with the dreamlike atmosphere of the series, and lent it an old-timey charm. Kind of like 30s/40s movie music.

If you do decide to watch '02, look no further than the AnimeINC&Anime-Fansubs version that's on BBT. It's a great release that manages to combine fansub "flavoring" with flowing, natural English, and uses an elaborate multi-colored styling scheme without sacrificing readability.

Only... the Toei Clannad movie came out during or after the first KyoAni TV series.

Yeah they're still up, but 48 individual torrents with few or no seeds aren't going to help anyone. IRC would be a better route there.

It depends on your subbing preferences; a.f.k. is more "liberal," localizing certain things to avoid onscreen translation notes. They didn't include the characters' speech affectations unless they're plot-relevant, and uses Western name order. XviD/hardsub/avi only. SS-Eclipse (which I watched) are more "literal," with some translation notes throughout. Luckily they weren't over-literal enough to annoy me. They included speech affectations, and used Japanese name order. Dual-release XviD/avi/hardsub and h264/mkv/softsub.

I would also throw the R1 DVDs (and the rips thereof, like Exiled-Destiny) into the ring -- ADV/Funi's subtitles are similar to SS-Eclipse's, and I noticed no major flaws with them. The English dub is also quite good, assuming you don't hate dubs in general.

Got any old fansubs on HDD/DVD/CD? Please take a look at this thread.

Slowly, painfully downloading. I got one through eight done, along with 17 and 18 done too.

Oh, and many, many episodes stuck at various percentages because of the lack of seeds! Since I am not in a hurry, I am fine with that.

I don't hate them. they just make my ears bleed.  :)

By the way, thanks for the elaborate reply.

I'm a huge fan of the 06 version, but I wouldn't bother with the 02 one unless you just love the 06 one and want more.   There's some minor differences in the story between the 2 versions, but I'd say the biggest difference (besides the length) between the versions is Yuuichi.  In the 06 version, Yuuichi seems like a much more caring person and his sarcasm/joking carries the series through some of the early parts where you're getting to know the characters.   In the 02 version, Yuuichi just seems to be reacting to what's happening around him rather than being personally involved in each arc.  He's also not funny, and there's very little comedy throughout the 02 version.

Like I said, you'd have better luck going to their IRC channel and getting the eps off one of the xdcc bots.

also because she was always present and somehow involved in the earlier incidents, if youre watching 2002 version, you just have to see the 2006 version afterwards. And she looked absolutely lovely in that dress ;]
