That was in the movie...

Which was not as funny as the book, though still funny (it's like Douglas Adams had the Midas touch of funny). In the book the mice come up with that themselves after the crew escapes, and don't get squished...

The meaning of life:

"Life" basically means that there's an inevitable ending, "Death".

Now, why must we go through what we go through on our journey towards Death, I would say it's whatever you believe it to be. Just like what defines what happens after Death. I'm surely not sure about what happens then, if anything at all. Religon gives you something to hold on to in these unsure instances.

There were 5 books, but if I recall correctly, the fifth book didn't have much to do with Arthur Dent.
