Games similar to pokemon

I'm in the mood for game like pokemon, but not necessarily in the "catch you oppononts" kind of way, although I wouldn't mind it. What I'm after is something similar in the way that you travel from town to town challenging the gym leaders (or the best in that town and so on). If anyone know of something like what I just described post it here.

One of the Yu Yu Hakusho for GB classic was RPG style. You  basically leveled up your chars from town to town. It swaps from a flat land enviro to side scroller when you challenge areas.

Play all the pokemon games... again.

Also you could play Earthbound just because of how awesome it is, although it's nothing related to catching creatures. Just go through dungeons and fight the boss at the end.

Lol I had the same feeling a couple weeks ago.  Had to dig out my Pokemon Ruby and play it on the DS.  Those games were a lot of fun, and now that I'm older it's cool to see that there's also a lot of strategy involved that I never really paid attention to as a kid.

You might look into Dragon Quest, which has the "train monsters" aspect to it.

Touhoumon, edited version of Pokemon only instead of monsters you send out Touhou characters instead

No, you do not need to level them up.  Either way, everyone needs to play both the GS games...because they are just that amazing(especially the 2nd one).

No, you just had to collect them, the more you had the more powerful spells you got.

I'm not sure how similar Golden Sun is to Pokèmon, but it's definitely an amazing game and worth checking out.

I just started playing Persona 4 and I can't see I'm exactly seeing the similarities to Pokèmon other than the normal RPG development. Can anyone recommending the SMT games shed insight into this?

SMT games similar pokemon games would be the Devil Children series (aka DemiKids)

You go around collecting demons! (some with... erm... *misplaced* horns!)
