Humour in Bleach (anime only)
« on: August 12, 2009, 05:30:21 PM »
Is it just me or does anybody else find most of the humour in Bleach quite frustrating and repetitive?

I’ve found that a large amount of the humour is generated from characters beating each other up in a slapstick manner. I’ve lost count of how many different characters do this.

Ichigo, Rukia and Ririn beating Kon,
Rukia beating Ichigo;
Ichigo fighting with his dad Isshin;
Ichigo’s sister and Isshin;
Kukaku and Ganju;
Hiyori beating Shinji, Urahara and Ichigo;
Stark and the little girl in his fraccion (Lilith I think her name is);
Keigo getting beats from Ichigo and mainly his sister;
Tatsuki and that girl that molests Inoue;
Soifon and Vice-Captain Omeada;
Nel headbutting Ichigo etc. etc. etc.
(Please feel free to add to this list)

I know slapstick fighting amongst allies is common in anime but seriously, how much do they want to overuse the same joke over and over? And even if they do think that it is really that funny, do they really need so many characters to act like this? Even in rival anime Naruto; I realised that it is predominantly only Sakura punching out Naruto when he does something silly but in Bleach I feel that very often it is uncalled for which further makes it annoying rather than funny; I mean just look at Hiyori.

On a separate note I also found the antics of Dondachakka, Pesche and Nel hard to tolerate, but as I said it may just be me?

Thank You for reading  ;D

Yeah I had a feeling it was just me noticing minor things too much but that tends to happen when you start getting really fed up of something (not Bleach itself just the overused slapstick violence).

But in my personal opinion (I know not everyone will agree with this) I don't feel the fights are too much like DBZ, yes they are long but DBZ fights are much longer and probably less cliche in that I've realised in Bleach you get many many many more of the 'last minute saves' but then again that may just be me noticing small things too much since I didn't notice it as much in DBZ.

I do enjoy the bleach fight scenes i agree though that some times the humor can be repetitive. Don't stop me watching it though.. :)

well u know, being a very very long runing series there is bound to be repetitive elements time and time again.
Though Bleach has a plethora of both interesting and irritating characters, the one-on-one interaction
between many of the characters can't really sustain interest and attention. some characters are really conceived with no apparent scope for comedy.
take for instance
1> kenpachi and ichigo's dad >> what the hell will they interact about
2> rukia's brother has a rather very limited sense of humour
3> can you imagine Aizen in any slapstick situations?
4> Ichimaru can only be wickedly prococative.
5> not to forget the bwaa-haaa--haaa magician! slapstick aside what else can that character be useful for.

i can come up with a lot better ones if i take some more time, but i guess u see my point.

yea, about the repetitive humour, i hear you bro, its just plain over used!!
damn when will this anime get back to the main storyline.....

It's a show meant for 12 year old boys, anything more complex than koi puns would alienate their core audience.

Yes, you do make a good point. I know repetition and humour in this long series would be unavoidable but my main argument was mainly just for just the overuse of slapstick violence between characters and why the makers see it neccesary for so many characters to behave in such manner, it wouldn't be so bad if there were just 2-3 characters like this. I swear I wish someone punches Hiyori into another world or something  :P , she keeps calling people 'dickhead' all the time when she's the biggest dickhead in the series, and one of the biggest dickheads in anime history imo! But yeah, hasn't this Hueco Mundo/Espada Battle arc been interupted like 3-4 times or something? I heard they do this whenever the anime catches up to the manga.

Lol  :D , I agree with that in some aspect. The first arc (when it got really going) was great and exciting but I don't really feel that excitement anymore even when watching much of the main story. Don't get me wrong though, I am not hating on Bleach, I still think it is a decent series just feel disappointed in it's current state.

Soul Society arc was epic, one of the best action animes at that point, but it never delivered again after that, and just keeps going down hill

Kind of like the Chuunin exam in Naruto. Or Zabusa arc. I cried since it never came again....

and then in bleach, the same happened, and then we got the swimsuit fanservice... I cried again. It was not what I wanted.
This is your home now. So take advantage of everything here, except me.

It's not the repetitiveness that bothers me about it. It's the whole idea of someone to easily slap for example Ichigo. Isn't he supposed to have lightning fast reaction and be able to move hellishly fast? He should just dodge it on instinct in my opinion. I think that could be equally funny. Rukia tries to slap Ichigo on the back of his head but he just keeps reading his book and either stops her hand, moves away or doesn't even react to it and just let's her hit him since the impact wouldn't be nearly powerful enough to hurt him in any way. She'd just hurt her hand.

That's my 2 cents..
