what is *rewatching* anime like?
« on: August 13, 2009, 06:56:31 AM »
how does it effect your experince knowing whats going to happen when you already seen a anime?

im asking because do you enjoy anime the same or better when you rewatch them or do you think they lose their *taste* or something.

for example if i watched clannad afterstory again do you think it will make you cry again at the tramatic parts or somethin

or watch blood+ again, i haven't seen it in such a long time, like 2 years.

i never rewatched a anime?

i feel that if i do, then that experince that i had watching the anime may be less then when i watched it the first time and i might not enjoy it as much as i watched the first time.

also how long do you think i should wait to rewatch a anime to get the full pleasure of it, for example like i was watching for the first time again?

(ive been wanted to watch blood+ for like  a year now but ive been holding it off becasue im scared i might not enjoy it as my first time watching it)

Depends on the person. I always forget some of what I watched, and I notice things that I didn't before, even with the stuff that I remember I still enjoy it just as much.

But there are people that I know if it is familiar they don't enjoy watching it again.  So try watching it again to see if you still enjoy it as much or nearly so.

Some anime I find are so good I could watch them a few times at least in a row (not many of them unfortunately).

I'm just gonna answer these, next time be a little more specific in your questions. Or set numbers in front of the questions you want answered.

Quote
i feel that if i do, then that experince that i had watching the anime may be less then when i watched it the first time and i might not enjoy it as much as i watched the first time.

Of course, it's less because you've already seen it, but if you really like a series or a movie, then the experience should be rewarding since it's a series you like, and wanted to re-watch.

Quote
also how long do you think i should wait to rewatch a anime to get the full pleasure of it, for example like i was watching for the first time again?

You should watch it when you feel like watching it, that's not a specific answer, but really, it depends on the user, and the anime. Unless you've got this interest in watching Fullmetal Alchemist again or Shakugan No Shana, then you shouldn't start re-watching it again, you'll be bored. But if I were to give you an answer then I would say 2-3 years, that's enough time for me at least to want to watch something again and then to maybe forget some of the things thats happens so you'll be a little surprused and think "Oh, that's right this happened back then".

that depends on the anime, but usually the emotions l build up are pretty much the same, if it's comedy l sometimes start laughing as the scene starts wich is even more enjoyable, however if it'saction/drama/romance etc i just don't think about what l remember and keep watching as if l was watching it the first time, much more enjoyable that way.

If it's a series you really liked then just rewatch it immediately. I watched Toradora twice in a row (once with subs, once RAW) and I learned a ton of new facts that I missed the first time through. Despite knowing everything that was going to happen, it didn't stop me from enjoying it any less (or crying any less :P). I've also watched Eureka Seven almost 10 times (3 times in dub and the rest in sub) within the course of 2 years. It hits me the same way every time. I think actually you have less of a chance of still liking the series if it has been a long time since you've watched it. Certain series will grow boring and seem stupid as you gain more experience in watching anime, and as your interests change with age. Of course, there will always be series that hit you hard no matter how many times or how long it's been since you watched it.

Rewatch whenever you're in the mood for it. I usually don't rewatch an entire series unless I really liked it or unless I'm in the mood for it.

I rewatch single episodes or arcs quite often though. Many times you might noticed things you missed the first watch, and that's always nice.

I usually only rewatch series which don't have an overarching plot, because I have a pretty good memory, so plot twists are a one-time thing for me.
Rewatch value for me lies in a few areas:
situational comedy (ala Lucky Star, Hyakko, Kazemakase Tsukikage Ran and SHAFT stuff generally),
relaxing or soothing atmosphere (Sketchbook and Aria mostly),
or single episode/short arc plots (Yakushiji Ryoko no Kaiki Jikenbo, Natsume Yuujinchou etc.).

Most series are not worth rewatching, to me. If I rewatch an anime, it's usually because it's been a while and I want to relive the story. I let a few months pass by, just enough for me to forget a few details and be able to have a few surprises and enjoy the retelling.

There are, thus far, two exception to that rule: ef (both Memories and Melodies) and Bakemonogatari.

Two reasons:
1. They are so god damn good that I want more, and all I can do is rewatch episodes
2. I feel I get parts I didn't each time I rewatch those

The answer depends on when was the last time you watched it. Did you watch it several years ago? Did you just watch it last week? Were you still a kid when you last watched it? Rewatching anime after several years will give you a different viewpoint. You may see the anime in a different light which may make you enjoy those titles you didn't enjoy before or dislike your highly rated shows of yesterday.

I've rewatched a certain episode 8 times these past few weeks simply because it was the latest episode. Imagine how I feel.

I think it varies from person to person, but in my personal experaince, I have a few that I watch at least once a year because I really enjoy them.  Ex.  Kanon 2006, Fate/Stay Night, and Elfen Lied.  It is just like rewatching a movie or anything else.

One thing is for sure, no matter who you are you need to track what you have watched because there is so much out there.  This way you can remember if you liked it or not, and if it is worth the rewatch.
I have typed these words and you have been forced to read them.  Now you can go cry in the corner if you like :)

I rewatch anime mostly if they are so deep or convoluted that additional watchings are in order to fully understand it. Things like Serial Experiments Lain or Revolutionary Girl Utena.
If a anime has very good character development or very deep characters I might rewatch it to fully grasp the characters. Revolutionary Girl Utena is a stellar example, as all characters develops and are rather deep and fleshed out.
I also rewatch things that I have a high emotional attachment to like Haibane Renmei.

Also, sometimes I rewatch stuff because I'm bored and want to watch something that I already know how it will turn out.

Does watching the same hentai over and again count?

depends on why ?
l like rewatching some hentais cuz they had some decent plot, or the artstyle was good enough, tough l have to say this, in Hentai, it's very rare that art style outside of hentai scenes are as bad as the hentai scenes at all, usually it's like, "oh the story so far is quite ok and the art is nice, oh waitm sex scene and the art style is worse than the crap l made this morning" like that...

tough Bible Black is an exception, since they tried hard to let the art style work around at all times. Altough l'm not watching as much hentai as l was some years ago, l don't find a need for it, just for a twist of mood and to see what they came up with again.

I only re-watch things that are truly good. And only after at least two years have passed, preferably four years. So that I have forgotten most of the details and they can provide me with oh and ah experiences when the most important parts (plot and characters) are already known.

It is better than watching a bad series, but not better than watching a medium series. At least for me.

I tend to rewatch certain episodes of my favorite series more than watching the entire thing. Unless I really enjoyed the story, in which case I'll watch it all. And then there are some series that I'll never watch again, even though they're some of my all-time favorites. It just depends on the series in question.

I've never in my life re watched an anime series.
although I'm planning to re watch Record of the lotus war soon as It's been years since I've seen it and just now downloaded the sequels.
So I'll have to get back to on the feeling.

I've rewatched most of the series rated at 4.5 or higher on my AP list, and several of the 3.5s and 4s as well (the exceptions are mainly ones where I'm waiting for higher quality releases); if something ranks that highly on my list, it's certainly good enough to watch again, unless heavily reliant upon one or more plot devices that'd lower the entertainment value of watching it again. If I have little time or jsut want to watch something out of context, I'll usually load up a random episode of Lucky Star or some other slice of life show.

Most new shows can't begin to compare to the truly excellent ones, and watching a quality show is far more satisfying than some run-of-the-mill garbage.

The first anime that I ever rewatched (well, am currently rewatching) in its (planned) entirety is Toradaora, simply because it's so good.

Rewatching comes with the territory of buying anime. When I first started collecting, I heavily re-watched the few shows I had. Even after acquiring a lot of shows, you still want to get your money's worth by watching DVDs more than once. I rarely re-watch downloaded content; I think the only downloaded files I've ever re-watched are Kanon 2002, Shinigami's Ballad, Tanjou Debut, and a couple of hentai. Normally I don't re-watch things I've downloaded until I get the DVDs. So I try to re-watch everything I own, and the average has been about 3-4 years between viewings.  I don't completely forget everything after that length of time, but I find that I remember general plot points while forgetting some of the specifics of how those plot points are executed. For instance, I'd remember that Character A killed Character B, but forget that the spirits of A's family members killed by B came back to hold B in place as B's own projectile weapon hit him.

As for emotional parts, I've found that I've been affected on subsequent viewings almost as much as the first time. This has held true in my rewatches of shows like Air, Kanon (both '02 and '06), Fruits Basket, Mahoromatic, Rumbling Hearts, Angelic Layer, Elfen Lied, Azumanga Daioh, Chrono Crusade, and others. Sometimes, like with Kanon, knowing what's really going on lends a new dimension of sadness to seemingly-innocent earlier scenes. And for fanservice/comedy shows, I'm likely to laugh just as much on subsequent viewings as I did the first time. I've seen Yumeria 3 times, and I could easily see myself watching it again.

One thing that helps is to re-watch in a different format. And by "format," I mean fansubs vs. English dubs vs. official subs. Watching a different rendering or interpretation from what you first saw can help keep the content fresher. And in the cases of some radically liberal dubs, it's almost like watching a different show. (Check out Generator Gawl, Orphen + Orphen Revenge, and Ghost Stories for some examples.)

Code Geass is the only anime ive fully watched twice, and that was due to the blu-ray of S1 been released. Was still as epic as the first time, long its its one you greatly enjoy its all good, no different to a movie really
