Macross DYRM movie which version
« on: August 18, 2009, 05:16:16 PM »
According to AniDB several groups have finished the series since G_P released their version. Would it be worth replacing this with some other version?

I was mostly thinking about the FLF & L-E version, but the one by NLA might be its equal? I don't have any of these versions, so just curious after having watched the G_P version and not being happy with the subs.

Edit since NLA was released prior to the remaster I doubt it can compete in video/audio. Downloading the two others to compare. (Had already deleted G_P prior to noticing the L-E release.)

There's a number of comments in this thread at the supposedly fansub-hating ANN. Primarily this one, if you don't want to wade through the thread:
Quote from: Renaissance Otaku
I must add that the Bakawolf is the absolute worst copy of DYRL on the net outside of the old HK rips. The grain removal was so poorly done and overly aggressive as to outright remove fine detail from the movie. It's like Vaseline on the lens at times. The G_P release is by far the superior to it for a grain free version. It has some hardsubbed karaoke, but it doesn't remove the very point of the remaster like the B-G does. The B-G even steals it's script straight from the G_P ver1, complete with Macrossworld thanks and song errors that were fixed in v2. All they did was DNR the heck out of it and slap their names on someone else's work.

That said, the L-E version is the best for the remaster. Though I should point out that it also had a grain scrubbing as well. They just tried their best to be as non-destructive as possible. I'm a fan of grain, though DYRL really was swamped in it.

The NLA is the best for the Perfect Edition, pre-remaster. The remaster was rather lackluster. Mostly just a contrast/tint tweak with some color changes for continuity.
It seems the main complaints on the G_P version were about the hardsubbed karaoke. The FLF&L-E file has several different subtitle options, so I'd assume it's got softsubbed karaoke. I did get the NLA release, which is fine by my standards. I was planning to upload it as the Group C/XviD version. Getfresh of FLF speaks highly of NLA's TL/editing, so maybe that's where NLA is "equal." But it seems like FLF&L-E would be a worthy h264 replacement for G_P.

Got any old fansubs on HDD/DVD/CD? Please take a look at this thread.

The video quality on the two releases is near enough to not matter to me after checking them both side by side for ~8 mins, below is what I found during that time. Can upload screens if anybody wants.

Plus for G_P is that they had the kanji for the songs during karaoke. I didn't find any others.

Plus for FLF & L-E is that they have more sub tracks to choose between depending on what one wants. Karaoke, notes or just normal subs. At ~2 min mark they put subs up for what the crew was saying. (Which for some reason MPC HC didn't capture, even though it captured the other subs.) They used the miclone term instead of micron.

Something that I am not sure is a plus or not is that G_P used the romaji of what was sung while FLF used the actual English word. For example, HAATO vs HEART and RABUSAIN vs LOVE SIGN. There was also a few other instances of differences where which side that came out ahead wasn't clear. G_P felt more literal while FLF felt more like it captured the meaning in a natural way.

http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=22628 also had a minor discussion about this.

I daresay we can keep G_P's one and put up NLA and FLF&L-E alongside it. I'd wait for another mod's response before uploading FLF&LE though. NLA is free to go, since it's DIVX/AVI.
