IRC connection strangeness...
« on: August 18, 2009, 08:33:30 PM »
I'm using ChatZilla at the moment, and I've only started getting on IRC actively as of last week, so I am rather noob-ish in this area.

My problem: I can't connect to Rizon, every time I try reconnecting it times out repeatedly. I've tried EnterTheGame and Mozilla and can connect fine within a few seconds. Is it possible that I've been banned from Rizon? ('Cos that would suck and I don't think I've done anything to warrant a ban in the few short days I've been on.) If not, what else can I do to solve this problem?

PS I can connect via the web client.

Use something other than chatzilla.
Problem solved.

Alternative A: Go to www.rizon.net and select a different server.

Alternative B: Click on the link to the channel and not inputting it to the client manually.

Alternative A worked for me, thanks, though quite a few of the servers still give me timeout errors.

I'll also get a different client and try that. Thanks.

I recommend you use irc.lolipower.org. It's one of the more reliable Rizon servers out there.

Hmm, some servers which I was able to connect to yesterday are now timing out on me, including lolipower... I'm going to try with a different client.

Try my Alternative B, it usually works better.

What I meant by Alternative A working for me was that Alternative B didn't, unfortunately. Regardless of whether I type them in or clicked irc links, I keep timing out. Thanks for the help, A worked for awhile.

So which IRC client would you guys recommend? mIRC?

*Sigh* if only I'd kept xchat around when it was still free for Windows... I guess I'll have to be creative for whichever I choose.

Oh, that's a nice one, thanks Sosseres.

However, I still can't connect! Now it says socket error...

Is socket error the exact message or does it continue onwards? There are several types of socket errors.

Okay, it says Socket Error: Connection Timed Out, which leads me to believe it's my connection to the server that's screwed rather than any software I'm using. I've tried all the Rizon servers at this point, and it seems to be only Rizon that I can't connect to.

Tried connecting through a proxy to see if it is your isp that is the problem?

Tried using a direct IP number instead of the standard URL to see if it is a DNS error?

Perhaps just doing a tracert from your computer would tell more since you can see where it stops and if it can even resolve the IP.

Perhaps a specific port is blocked, though I doubt it since that would block most networks.

How would one force an IRC client to go through a proxy?

Rizon doesn't give out its server IPs.

Tracing route to irc.impact-media.me.uk [85.17.36.73] That should be one of their IPs since I did a trace route on the server that I connected to rizon with ~30 mins ago.

I am not sure how to use a proxy with irc, there is bound to be a way, but I've never needed to learn it. ^^

Nope, using the IP didn't work either. Guess I'm using the webclient for now. Thanks for all your suggestions, everyone.
