ATI and Video problem
« on: August 24, 2009, 04:07:57 PM »
When i bought my new computer i went with a ATI graphics card. Theres been some problems with the drivers, like black textures in games(seems fixed now).

I cant say its 100% certain. But it seems to be the graphics card that cause a crash once in a while. It happens while playing video, ive had it happen with stream and regular players.
The reason i think its the grapics card driver is becouse i updated it a long time ago and got this problem. Ive been trough 4-5 drivers and still have the problem.

Sounds familiar? Got a magical solution? :P

If you're crashing it might be heat-related. Try getting ATI Overdrive and pumping up your fan speed.

The grapics card is underclocked unless i play demanding games.
Anyways, video run on the cpu, not gpu. Unless you tamper with the player. The gpu only display it, and thats not verry demanding.

Could be that you just got a bad card. I would return it and try again, if you have already done a clean install of the driver software. By the way, what graphics card are we talking about here. Plus, you aren't crossfired are you? I have heard that this problem happens a lot when you crossfire graphics cards. Also, try pulling the card out and just going through the area with a can of compressed air. Sometimes dust trapped in the PCI port will do this to you.

Think i identified part of the problem. I were running MPC as VMR9 Renderless, after i changed i dont seem to crash with MPC. At least not yet.

Regardless, that shouldn't be happening, I have no problems with my laptop, and since you probably have a better graphic card than me I can only imagine that the driver for yout card is more developed and better...

Most of my PC deceases disappear when I re-format my system, though I doubt you'll be willing to do that just to test something out.

ATi are good cards, I've yet to have a problem with one, though I will say the same for nVidia. They both have there perks, and are equal in my opinion. I will say SLI is way better setup then Crossfire. But side by side no Crossfire or SLI I tend to be pushed more towards ATi for my media machines. Gaming they are both too close to compare since really it depends on the game for which card is better.

If the problem persists I would try first reverting to an older version of the drivers (if you are on the 4XXX or HD series I wouldn't recommend going below 9.1 if your on the 3XXX stay in the 8.Xs at lowest.) If that doesn't work then I would try uninstalling the player and or the codecs and re-installing. If all that fails try bringing the card back to core clocking and try that. past that I don't know what to tell you other then talk with ATi tech support and see if they can assist you on that problem...

Uh why is that a problem? Do ATI cards have solder bump problems? You're making claims without any form of proof to backup them. Nvidia fanboy perhaps?

I just bought an ATi card today (4870) since it was on special. Will try it later to see how it runs.

I went with a ATI graphics card.

This is your problem.

The card is fine. ATI drivers are the problem. I had 2 ATI cards before and had loads of problems with there drivers. I had the Radeon 3200 and 9800. Both cards are old and yes it was years ago but I had only problems with the drivers. I had to reinstall drivers for the card several times before it worked right. Updating the drivers was a pain in an ass. This is when I went to Nvidia and got the 7800 GT. Your video card is only good as your driver. Without a proper driver your card will run like crap no matter how powerful the box says it is.

Try downloading the latest Catalyst drivers. There were issues on my L300 with the factory original 8.x series, but seriously after Catalyst 9.5, things have gotten much better.

I'm using 9.7 on my Radeon 3100 IGP and so far have no issues to report under Windows 7, except to the fact that now all Toshiba Radeon 3100's can use ATI's generic drivers without mob-modding it.

That sounds like you believe more drivers can be used for several graphic cards? Aren't only one driver supposed to work for one graphic card, of course if there are several versions.

When I want to update my drivers for my ATI on my laptop, there's only one driver/package for my card. But this is not the case with other graphic cards? The only ones I've had are Geforce FX 5200 which is an oldie now, and my mom is currently running that PC, lol, quite funny that she's still able to use the computer as it's 5-6 years old.. + ATI RADEON MOBILITY EXPRESS 200M (which I'm running now)

Yes there is only one driver per video card. ATI drivers werent good drivers. They had problems with certain games and software. The 3200 Radeon had a problem with XP when it came out. Even when ATI release a XP version of the driver. I don't know about newer ATI video cards since i didn't buy another ATI card since the 9800 Radeon was release.

The never ones are doing a lot better then the older ones with the drivers, and actually I know of a second driver set for both nVidia and ATI, that would be the Omega drivers. Unless your going for mainstream gaming though I wouldn't recommend that route, those drivers can sometimes be quite a major pain.
