I'm in two minds over this video, (it's very old and I'm pretty sure I watched it way back when CNNNN was airing on the ABC).
In short, thanks to selective editing, we don't see all the answers to all the questions, they may have been the only questions that those people got wrong.
However the long answer is that yes, I do believe this reflects the "average" American. Most of the people in the video were over the age of 40, quite a few over 50, so their "education" would have ended a long time ago, they are also unlikely to be on the internet to check on facts and continue a self-education. You also have to take into account that although the U.S.A.ian administration maybe harping on about the "War on Terror" most of the average Americans wouldn't now too much about it; I'm British/Australian and I couldn't tell you who were in the various coalitions,
however I can find out.
Not knowing about Pound Sterling is pretty bad. Not being able to find Middle Eastern countries and countries like Korea on a map; somewhat okay, confusing them with Australia; WHAT!!?? You can also watch shows like Family Feud, who wants to be a Millionaire, Are You smarter than a 5th Grader?, pretty much any knowledge based show and come across these types a stupid answers to otherwise intelligent people.
The other thing you have to take into account is that the U.S.A. is the
third most populous country in the world and that you should never underestimate the power of stupid people in large quantities.
Can you do better?
