The last time I tried to slipstream ... it didn't do anything.

Legal copy.   I've redefined that in my own books.   It's buying a license, and getting a copy of the disc from whoever/wherever.

( Gotta love their new OEM bullshit.   "If you change your motherboard you no longer can use it."  I've got other complaints about MS - their licensing is asshole. )

Any form of licensing is shit.

Can of shit with candy.

Before I went to Vista, I installed SP3 and it went very well. Only problem I can see is that your Windows copy is not legit. You were doing SOMETHING or SOMETHING was doing SOMETHING, you know, they call it PROGRAM WAS RUNNING while SP3 was installing. Whenever a Service Pack is installing, I close the freaking gates on everything and let it do its thing. I complained to myself when shit hit the fan while SP was installing, I was watching anime and using utorrent and PhotoShop was open, and and and and ... gah.

Or, you just had some bad luck. Switch to Vista, or wait till Windows 7 comes out ... buy a legit copy for you own sake or keep having headaches.

It's more likely that his copy of XP was raped by 1337 hax0r5 to begin with.
A smart thing to do is to "obtain" the technet/msdn version then verify the hashes.

If I'm not mistaken it does recommend you to close all open programs as it may need to change some files.  ;)

I remember installing SP1 for Vista the first time, FFS!!! It took several hours! My PC isn't slow, it's got 1GB ram so it should've been able to do it somewhat fast. I turned it on at 18:00 pm or something and it was still running at 22:00 pm. I just think it was that time when Vista was still having one of its child sicknesses...
