I have air filters on each of the intake fans. I use to put my keyboard in the dishwasher on cold run but cant do that anymore since I have wireless now

Now THAT'S smart thinking.  :)   I loved those when I had them ... ages ago.

I've got too much hardware to maintain - so I do em on an as-needed basis.   Usually every 2-3 months - when a random BSOD tells me to.

Last PC I've cleaned - I busted out a nice mini screwdriver and poked around the heatsink on the CPU.   The fins are so fine, most of the dust crap just gets stuck on top of the fins ( hair, carpet fibers, etc ) - and can be pulled right out.   Got a nice big handful out.

When it's fun-time, I just bring them outside - set em up on a folding table - and reverse a shop-vac on em.

:)

The cloud of dust is always epic.

Nothing.

i usually get a vacuum to remove the dust from the outside of the case and i wash all the intake fans filters every couple of months or so

the inside of my case i only usually clean once a year, the innards of my computer don't collect much dust

You don't clean your CPU's fan at all?

I've had my laptop for over 4 years, just replaced the ram in it about a month ago, and to do so I had to pretty much take the computer apart. My fan had a very small bit of dust on it and everything else was clean. The keyboard collects dirt from my fingers, but other than that I have never had to clean my laptop.

Yea, laptops are a different thing. I never owned one and I never heard of people cleaning their laptops from inside, unlike a Desktop PC.

I was just wondering if he really never cleaned his CPU's fan. It must be clogged up with dust.

i designed the heatflow in the case pretty nicely so all active fans (two, most of the time running in idle-mode) are covered from falling dust and no real place for dust to gather.
aside from that it's not like i've set up a grinding machine beside the pc to produce dust.
in what kind of environment do you guys life where the cleaning of fans is actually needed? o.O - i still have a 133 Mhz never-cleaned Pentium standing around with only a little dust inside.
i guess it's literary about how much wind someone makes with his pc. :) (more air movement, more dust is raised, more dust gets in and sticks...)

In the 4 or 5 years I've had the PC I have never cleaned it out. I reckon I need to at least clean the fan it's gotten way to loud, also a lot of dust seems to come out or clogs up these little holes it the side.
I think it's more likely small rooms and less air movement so the dust settles like mine.

I can't believe you people. Well, I keep my computer clean. I want this one to live for the next 5 or 6 years until something better than Core i7 comes out.

You won't have to wait 5-6 years for better, just two.

The last time i cleaned out my desktop's CPU fan was when i had to take it and my heat sink out to install a new HDD a month or two ago. There was quite allot of dust caked on the thing.

Mine doesn't get dusty at all. I've never cleaned it once since 2001. I did change a couple of components, though (MB, CPU).

My only issue with it currently, is the CPU getting extremely hot (~60 C idle, 85+ C at full work). It's a bit old, but I can't afford a worthy upgrade at the moment. I've been thinking about putting on new cooling pasta which would probably fix it, but it's too much of a bother.

Get a new fan? Or maybe you need more air-flow? I mean, if you haven't changed the fan since 2001 then maybe it needs to get changed. I'm not a fan expert, tho'.

The setup is fine. The fan is a custom Thermaltake, not the one boxed with the processor. It has worked fine earlier, it has just got worse lately.

Good lord. Just had to use some nailvarnish remover on my mcbook because  I spilt some earlier, and I didn't realise quite how grey it is. I'm getting shit loads of dirt off the whole thing. Time for a clean I think!

I have a laptop, about three years old and I haven't cleaned it yet. I know the keyboard might need cleaning, but what the hell, it's going to crash soon enough so can't be arsed to do it. But I did use to clean my screen, but now it's torn off. And it's not like I have foods stuck in my keyboard, only dust and hair xD

Having a white laptop it becomes quite noticable how dirty it is as soon as you get nailvarnish remover on it. But then I'm a messy sod anyway
