soo.. any way to seed better with comcast?

I usually have problems with seeding. I used to use just regular old bit torrent and sometimes id get to upload at like 100kbs or so for a little while, then it woudl throttle to 50k for a while then putter out. I usually seemd to have problems though and it would only upload at about 5kbs or so for a while. Still i would occasionally get decent little bursts for a while

my speedtest results are usually about 14mbs d.load and 3.8 ul

I tried d.loading Vuze because my friends kept saying how great it was. Well it seems to work terrible for me, i cant upload with it at all, the most i got was about 34kbs for a few seconds and most of the time it just gives about 3kbs for a few seconds then shuts off.

so i reinstalled regular old bit torrent but it seems to be sucking worse than before

I looked around on some FAQ's and saw comcast listed as causing problems with seeding. Is there anything ic an do to get around this? my ratios not that hot, about .7 but im really trying. I leave it on all day but when you get short bursts of 3kbs then it just stops its impossible. Am i just boned or is there any way to get this stupid thing to seed properly? preferably with regular bit torrent, i dont like the layout of vuze

In uTorrent, you can enable encryption to try getting around Comcast's filters, but they can probably easily detect even that at this point. If that doesn't work, there isn't really anything that can be done. Your ISP is ultimately in control of the traffic that goes over it's network.

i thought of trying the encryption method but i remember hearing that that can lock you out of private trackers.. which i belive this is right? No point in doint it and having it lock me out of the only tracker i care about my upload rate on =P

there was an option in vuze (even though i dislike it) called lazy bitfield that was said it could help.. but it did nothing, and i dont see an option for that in the regular vanilla Bittorrent 6.2 that i prefer

In uTorrent, use Forced encryption, uncheck allow legacy connections. Use a high port number 50000+.

You can also try using uTorrent 1.9.x, it's a beta client, but we allow it for these kinds of purposes. 1.9.x uses UDP which should get around Comcast's traffic shaping / throttling.

Don't keep your connection maxed out or Comcast will throttle your entire connection.

My major problem with everything is having to share my connection with my brother who uses a shit load of bandwidth and I can't see how far along the cap we are. Last month it looked like I hit over there max amount since the last few days of that period I went from my normal of 250 upload on this line down to barely being able to push 20 out and didn't try to dl things... So that is where I hit problems, I have everything else running fine with uTorrent, though I do occasionally have to flip ports I'm sending over. I would recommend like setting a range of 25 ports in the 50000+ range to flip threw if you see a noticable drop in performance if you choose not to try the 1.9.x route. I'm not much of a fan of beta on these type of programs so I will stick with what is working for me at this moment.

i thought encrypting it locked me out of private trackers. i guess your saying it doesn't lock me outa this one. Ill take a look at the ports but i think bittorrent just has a single listening port listed and i think its 6000something

anyone know any other workarounds? I used to get good upload speeds for small stretches of time in the past but it seems to be really throttled down now adays

Still I'm with Psyren, I've yet to get banned for encryption on a private tracker and my uTorrent has been running forced since I started using it.

Oh, I wasn't disagreeing with him.  I was merely pointing out that even if private trackers had a tendency to ban people who enforced encryption, we aren't a private trackers, and thus it wouldn't matter.

If you're using Windows XP SP2/SP3 or Vista, try patching your TCPIP.SYS. It won't help against the throttling but it will allow windows to have more open connections at a time.

blea.. well i tried the forced conection and unclicked the allow legacy conection button then left it on all day today. checked in a few times... speeds still seem pathetic but it doesn't seem to be hanging up as much as it used to.. i guess thats a slight improvment? still only got less than 500megs up with it on ALL day with 4 different shows open all day. When it first started up the speed was at about 85k for a minute or 2 on a few then they went down to the pathetic <5kbs >_<

protocol encryption: forced with allow incoming legacy conections UNCHECKED

listening port is 62422 right now
with enable UPnP port mapping, and Enable NAT-PMP port mapping both checked, as well as allow windows firewall exception

any of those seem off to you guys? I really am not sure what else i can do =(

also still wondering what the incoming legacy connections button does

this is just frustratring because i have decent bandwith to share, and the ability/desire to just leave it on to do so, but it seems comcast or something is preventing me from doing it =(

Since XP SP2, MS imposed a security limit on the number of open TCP connections you can have at a time. Although you can see hundreds of peers connecting to you, only 10 of them can be serviced at a time. If you're unlucky, the peers connected to you may be really slow, making the throttling more painful (the peers cannot utilize all of your throttled bandwidth). Patching will increase the limit, allowing more peers to utilize your bandwidth.

I want to stay part of this community but I feel like I have to download more to be able to upload just a lil bit, sooner or later I feel like this is gonna lead to a warning.


Has anyone tried the beta Utorrent? I'd like their feedback on whether it works or not before using it.

well we had a looonggg power outage a few days ago followed by the internet being down for a while after that.. oddly enough after that my upload speeds seemed to improve o_O Not really sure why my router settings appear the same. But ive got extended periods of upload speeds beyond 150K on other trackers and upwards of about 60k for a while on this one

*shrug* maybe somethings screwed on their end that got rid of the upload speed cap?

Another option you may want to look into is using TOR (http://www.torproject.org) to encrypt the traffic... Generally speaking TOR traffic isn't affected by shaping or throttling because it is fairly low latency in the first place, but be warned that it is going to be exceedingly SLOW, especially if you choose to send data traffic (which is considered to be fairly rude) across TOR because it is all dependent on individuals who are sharing their computers as exit nodes...

If you do decide to go that route... I would recommend setting up an old box and dedicating it to just running the seeds all the time...
