The things I've downloaded have finally started seeding again, but my ratio is even higher in the red.  I thought that seeding made my ratio go down, but now it's going up.  I can't find anything in the wiki that explains this clearly.

Seeding makes your ratio go up, the closer to (or higher) than 1.000 the better.

Ratio is Upload Amount / Download Amount

If you have downloaded 10 GB and uploaded 5 GB you have a ratio of: 5 / 10 = 0.5
If you have downloaded 20 GB and uploaded 40 GB you have a ratio of: 40 / 20 = 2

Higher ratio is better.

well, your ratio is still pretty bad - continue seeding and "the guy" will stop crying ;)
you haven't downloaded much yet, so it should be pretty doable - good luck.
