Hahaha, it doesn't make ANY sense until season 2. Then all questions will be answered.
But honestly, it doesn't need any answering. Just take it for what it is.

Keep watching my friend.  You'll be glad you did. ;D
Honest truth, it's one of my all-time top favorite animes, ever.

Watch all of Higurashi, i think you'll find it satisfiying even if you are left with many question by the end of it. And don't worry about how confusing things are at where your at, all will be revealed and will make sense. Though you'll have to watch season 2 to answer everything.

l'll say it this way, Higurashi in terms of plot, in season 1 don't seem to make much sense, but if you do't watch season 1 you won't understand half of season 2, and seing some great emotions that go withing this first season are priceless, just watch it, you won't regret, this season is where you get to know alot about characters, while in season 2 there are more answers as to why thi all happened and what not, just stay tuned, and relay your opinions to here, l'll be glad to talk over the stuff with you as l'm fanatically watching the series in one go every month, l just can't stop beccause it's just this great to me.

l also hope youre not watching it in english dub, it's terrible.

here is a giant spoiler l just found on wiki :D
it's interesting, the games will be out next month in full english, and hopefully with  the new CGs ;]

There's also the Ayu release on BBT, which is fansubbed / not dubbed. But I"d really recommend The Triad's release. Best subs out there, better than the DVD subs imo. (The Higurashi DVD subs were from the same translator and subtitle writer that were behind the lackluster Kannazuki no Miko DVD subs.) Only drawback is that the A/V quality isn't as good.

I always viewed the "not making sense" part as one of the charms of Higurashi S1, especially the early arcs. After all, a 500-page mystery novel isn't going to explain everything in the first 50 pages, is it?

LOL OMG! i was doing a google search for Higurashi and uncut because i heard it got censored because of its violence and came across this :

http://blogs4brownback.wordpress.com/2007/09/28/anime-encourages-murder/

it was a really sad/funny read. Evidently this series is based on a murder simulation! *gasp* i guess in the same regard all FPS's on xbox are shooter simulations, or GTA is a prostitute beating simulation!

my favorite line was
"It can take months for a legitimate American company to clean up and redub offensive raw anime into a form more suitable for western audiences. But anime fans want “pure” and uncut material that would otherwise never be allowed to be viewed outside of the perverted otaku subculture in Japan."

OH NOES OUR POOR AMERICAN PSYCHIES! thank you mr senator for protecting the american way of ignorance and censorship!

good lord, i actually couldn't finish it all, if someone can more power to you.

annnnyywayyy. after that i couldn't really keep looking. I was wondering if this show WAS edited for the TV release? Im sure the exiled destiny dvd one is uncut, but i jsut wanted to be clear on whether or not the AYU one is uncut as well. Hell, did they even censor the TV version? I actually found out this is avalible here in the states (first season at least i think) and plan on snagging it if its decent. Im assuming the American DVD release is uncut? I'm guessing thats what the exiled destiny rips are

if l remember correctly there is a lot of teenagers going berserk with guns in schools, wich has nothing, l repeat, nothing to do with anime, l hereby preffer being a perverted otaku than a murderer teenager IMO.

Americans are pussies (no offence to american anime fans, just the pussies that censor anime)

l do understand that anime is censored by TV stations etc, but at the other hand DVD versions are always uncensored so here is something for you censoring ppl in the world :

Wow, I want to believe that blog article is an extremely elaborate troll. Sadly, I know it's not, thanks to the "nominated for best conservative blog" bit  ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) But as a fansubber, I have to feel flattered by its describing me as "a badass evil criminal mastermind who uploads illicit files to clandestine websites to corrupt millions of American children." It sure beats the truth, "unemployed loser with no life who spends hours fixing frame-timing errors for subtitles on magical girl anime that no more than 2000 people will download." So suffice to say, that blog entry is a load of BS that knows jack shit about the anime industry in America or anywhere else. I've never heard anything about the US DVD release being edited/censored in any way, so you can assume that the E-D rips are also uncut. Both Triad and Ayu used TV source for the first half of the series, and DVD source for the second half. I've only seen the Triad version, but I honestly didn't see any cuts that seriously ruined anything. Maybe sometimes you get black blood instead of red, or gruesome scenes that get a little shadowed out. It's been awhile, but I can't even recall any scenes that jumped out and made me think, "Omg it's censored!"  Besides, violence and gore are sometimes just as good or better when implied than when actually shown.

I agree that the majority of Japanese anime and manga contain immoral content, but there are exceptions, such as Bible Black, an anime that promotes a favorable view of Christianity.

[Ed Note: We will look into that. Thank you.]

I snorted really loudly when I read that.

Favorable view of Christianity? Bible black? Is the person who wrote that on mushrooms or acid? ::)

This was prolly the last fuckin awsome show that I watched.(maybe like 2 months ago) aside from Toradora.  As far as nasty super violent shows ive seen like elfen lied, berserk, etc. this was the best.  I was a bit turned off in the beginning of the second season but the way it all came together like half way through was so fuckin amazing.  After seeing both seasons though I thought the 1st season was more entertaining and I liked it more.  Did anyone else feel that way? Not enough crazy ass kids killing each other.  Shion's arc is the best too!
