Higurashi no Naku Koro ni / When They Cry

Oh man I just started Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and I'm already 8 episodes in. After watching the first episode I knew I was in for one helluva ride!

Just to clarify, each story arc sort of resets the story. So every story arc has someone play the role as "the villain" because in the first arc the "villain" characters seemed to be Rena and Mion, while in the second arc the "villain" was Mion. In the second arc we learn that Mion and that insane town was involved in the disappearances, yet characteristics of other characters are still retained, right? So in the second arc, despite helping Keiichi bring down Mion to uncover the truth, Rena is still batshit insane? (Like in the first arc), yet I thought she would be involved with Mion in the second arc because the two seemed to be working together in the first arc?

So do we learn more about the story and characters from the different arc viewpoints, or is each arc a clean slate for the characters? Also, in the second arc, what was up with Rika stabbing herself when we don't see that anywhere else? I guess she did so when she went over to Mion's house for soy sauce, and knew what was coming

Oh man I am so stoked for this anime, its pretty awesome!

i put this in spoilers to be safe - don't want to start another of those wars...
i'd think rika, or at least from rika's perspective, is just as many, if not more, answers than hanyuu. hanyuu just seems to be chucked in there to explain a certain aspect, if i remember correctly.

Well, the original was made up of 4 question arcs and 4 answer arcs. S1 is 3 questions and 1 answer, while S2 is 3 answers and 1 question.

I started watching Higuashi yesterday and i've watched 4 episodes. It was absolutely awesome. But before that i watched one episode of Higurashi no koro ni kai thinking it was the first season. Are these the only 2 seasons? If not, could someone tell me the order?

Kai is the second season. Rei and Kira are sidestories and have no connection to the main plot. Watch them after the Kai if you liked the characters and their wacky antics. It might also be a good idea to watch the first season again after watching Kai so you get an idea what really happened.
