Avira AV & 64bit W7
« on: September 18, 2009, 11:19:50 PM »
Originally after I got the Windows 7 RC in 64bit I had Avira anti-virus (free edition). Then I uninstalled after realizing that a 32 bit antivirus on a 64 bit operating system is just asking for infections, and thus switched to avast. Now I have been reading that Avira does in fact support 64bit, but my installer installed to the x86 folder. I thought that it was just 32 bit but now I am pretty confused:

Does Avira Antivirus (free edition) fully support Windows 7 RC x64. I don't mean just compatibility, but does it work as a 64bit antivirus and cover all the corners?

Theoretically, it should run smoothly.

The thing is though, if it installs as just a 32 bit program because it doesn't recognize the OS or whatever the reason, then it isn't really protecting your computer, and any 64 bit malware installer will just breeze right by it.

General rule of thumb: Whatever worked on Vista will work on 7 without a hitch.

End of story
