Modifying softsubs

I've heard a lot of people say "it's softsubs, you can restyle it the way you like". How exactly do I do that?

I just want to change the color, no font/style change whatsoever

Kmplayer is the answer your're looking for. With it, it's simple and easy customizing all the softsubs you would like to modify!

Ummm... actually you can override the styles of subs within the FFmplayer settings that come with the CCCP (http://cccp-project.net).... but then of course you could be watching your movies in whatever player you want with the same excellent quality... but I guess that would be too convenient right?

Alternatively, you can extract the subtitle files, for that you need MKVtoolnix (www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/) and either mkvewizard or MKVExtractGUI (http://coreforge.org/projects/mkvextractgui/) Then open them in a Subtitle Editor such as AegisSub (www.aegisub.net/) and do whatever you ruddy well wish with the softsubs...

Keep in mind, that unless you know what you are doing, I don't recommend trying the Alternative unless you either already know what you are doing, or are working from a backup of the files rather than from the copy you are trying to seed back...

Actually I have CCCP and I'm using Media Player Classic but I have no idea what FFmplayer is

As for demux-aegisub-remux, I'm hoping for something less drastic than that. I know how to demux/remux but I'm totally clueless about styling subs

With Media Player Classic on the options that come up when you right-click, you can go to the Subtitles > Styles... menu to bring up a page of tabs that show all the styles used in the script. Find the style you want to change. Ideally this will be something intuitive like "Default" or [Name of Show] or [Name of Show] + Main. Sometimes you may have to extract the subs and inspect them in aegisub to figure out what they called the main style. For instance, if you look at Shin-GX&Genjo's Kannagi, it is virtually impossible to tell that "Tree_Subs" is the main style via MPC alone, unless you use trial & error or can recognize the font. Anyway, once you've found the main style, click the name of the font, and you'll get another menu box. That menu box will have a bunch of color boxes you can choose, so pick a color, apply all changes, and you're done.

However, and this is a big "however," not all softsubs are created equal. Fansubs that use .ass softsubs should work with the steps outlines above. If you're dealing with R1 DVD-rips that use "DVD-style" image subs (e.g. the subs seen in the screenshots in this torrent), you will not be able to change styles with any player's options. It is possible, albeit more difficult and time-consuming, to convert these:

1) Demux the subtitle stream you want -- make sure you know which track is full subtitles and which is Songs/Signs Only, if more than 1 track is present. You will get .idx and .sub files as a result.
2) Obtain and install a program like SubRip or SubResync.
3) Open the .sub file you demuxed. Find the video's correct frame rate*, and enter that in.
4) Go to "Save As..." and choose .ass or .srt format.
 --using .srt will style the subs with whatever "default" styling options your player used. If you use .ass, you can use the Styling Manager under Tools in Aegisub to change the "default" style to whatever you want.
5) The program will begin the OCR (Optical Character Recognition) process. You'll be shown letters, numbers, and other characters from the imagesubs. Enter the characters you see until the process finishes.
6) Check the resulting .srt or .ass for errors if you wish. C-> O and l -> I are among the more common ones.
7) Play your converted subs as an external file, or remux them into the original file.

*For videos that use Variable Frame Rate (VFR), all bets are off as to whether converted subtitles will still have correct timing. For those cases, you'll have to risk mistimed subs, find a different release, or get used to whatever styles were originally present.
