playstation 3 as a blu ray player - any good?

I play burned DVDs, BD5's, and BD9's on it all the time.  You can convert those 9 gig bluray ripped MKVs to a BD9 with tsMuxeR.  Some scene groups include with their releases a batch file to convert to BD5/9 and burn for you.  These also can be played on most standalone bluray players.  The PS3 thinks it's a AVCHD.  (though one time it thought they were actual Blu-ray disks.  Unsure if it was the PS3 firmware or tsMuxeR that changed that.)

But the PS3 does not play PAL DVDs.

Surely this depends on what area of the world you live in? Pretty sure 99% of my DVDs are PAL and play fine

Yep, that's what I meant.  PS3 is region restrictive.  NTSC or PAL.  I assumed one or the other.  Curious, can you play burnt NTSC DVDs on your system?  Well, don't have to worry with the later BD rips.
