But the PS3 does not play PAL DVDs.

Surely this depends on what area of the world you live in? Pretty sure 99% of my DVDs are PAL and play fine

Yep, that's what I meant. PS3 is region restrictive. NTSC or PAL. I assumed one or the other. Curious, can you play burnt NTSC DVDs on your system? Well, don't have to worry with the later BD rips.

i just tried to play a ntsc dvd*.. it didn't work :(
*that would be eddie izzard - glorious. a dvd i once bought in the us.. this info might actually be interesting for someone ::)
Tatsujin:
If your in Europe, your pretty much out of lucky. Get a PS3 from Japan or US with power adapter so you can get our releases faster and easier. If your either in America or Japan then you are in good shape. I believe that is Region A for the PS3. And ... as for as DVDs ... please, I dropped those a long time ago. Blu-ray is all I need and it is restricted to region A which involves US and Japan and ... whatever other countries out there. But the main countries are those two. :) So, my Bakemonogatari Blu-rays can play on my US PS3. <3

how about the controls? is it ok to control the player with the game pads?
also how about burned dvds..? ::) can they be played?
oh and can i plug in my external hard drive to play films over the ps?
thanks *tired*

Probably has already been answered, but it can handle a lot of video types. I'm not sure about .mkv though. I'll check and comeback and tell you though when I can =)
Well, I hooked it up and unfortunately, the answer is no =(
Fortunately, I found this handy little thing =)

As far as I know it can't handle MKVs. I know my boyfriend has to convert his mkv files for his ps3.
