Probably has already been answered, but it can handle a lot of video types. I'm not sure about .mkv though. I'll check and comeback and tell you though when I can =)

As far as I know  it can't handle MKVs. I know my boyfriend has to convert his mkv files for his ps3.

Yes currently the only peeve I have with PS3 atm, I would be SOOOOO happy if they add support for it. Wouldn't care to much if I knew how to convert an MKV to mpeg4 or vob without having to use MKV2VOB which transcodes the video even though mpeg4 video is supported and it transcodes the AC3 which I'm sure is supported as well.

Its because there are subs present, it hard codes the subs into the video, PS3 doesn't support ASS or srt or txt or vobsub or whatever.
Unless you export the subs into those dvd or avchd image subs and re-construct the IFO, and use Sony's BD author or DIY the AVCHD structure yourself and done!!

Its not that complicated, just needs some practice snd getting used to, soon you'll be authoring home dvds sooner than you've ever thought of.

Go to Doom9, they've got some amazingly detailed guides ready for you.

Or save yourself some trouble and extend a DVI to HDMI connector from your computer to your HDTV and ... bam, it plays anime. I watch all my stuff on my 37" HDTV. I want a 50" Plasma TV now with 1.3v >_<

Sebur:
I think I may have mentioned it before, but if you don't mind streaming your video files to your ps3 through your network you should download the ps3 media server.

It will stream just about any file inluding MKV, ISO and so on with the subtitles of your choice(You can choose them in the ps3).
