Pet Peeves

@kurandoinu
After some point in time of being a teacher you become sadistic. I'm sure it says so in their contract.

kurandoinu:
Lol. The class did give her quite a bit of shit really, but she was a weird ass teacher anyway. :/

People having large meals at KFC with extras and then pairing it with a coleslaw and diet pepsi peeve me. Its not gonna fucking balance out!

--- Quote from: Klocknov on September 28, 2009, 07:19:10 AM ---Okay I could give a shit less about whether a person wears their seatbelt or not, I don't see how that can affect the drivers ability to drive. I also wouldn't have an Uncle today if he was wearing a seatbelt. The seatbelt is a safety measure and I think it should be your choice to wear.

Another pet peeve, forcing people to do one thing when they should have a choice. It is like in math, if I can do it why should I have to show my work, and why when I show my work do I have to show a hundred and fifty steps that it takes an illiterate to do the problem when I do it in three, and why do I have to use your formula when I have one that works perfectly fucking fine.

--- End quote ---

A good portion of cars today have seat belts because they are statistically proven to reduce the likelihood of fatalities in a collision. If your uncle survived without a seat belt I'd assume a fire formed after the crash and he was able to get out in time or he was thrown out of the vehicle before the crashed into something fatal. You're right, it's your choice to wear and in addition seat belt laws are BS. However, if you want to play with the odds I'd like to first tell you that they're against you without a seat belt.
Since it's my dad he's going to wear a seat belt because I care about him. My dad tries to buckle his seat belt while the vehicle is in motion. This causes him to swerve a bit and not have his eyes fully on the road until he gets it buckled. This affects my own safety so it's in my interest that he first buckles up and then pulls out of the drive way.
They want you to show all your steps in math because when they're trying to grade it they don't want to spend time trying to connect the dots that you skipped over; what seemed obvious to you may not be so to others. Multiply those minutes spent doing this by the number of people in the class and you might end up with several hours more work. They want you to use their formula for the same reason, it's just easier to grade that way. This brings me to my next pet peeve, the USA education system.
The USA public education system teaches kids by applying a single methodology to all of them. Some of them learn great this way and some of them don't. The ones who don't get left behind not because they're stupid but because they learn differently and are oftentimes successful in more focused environments such as a tutor or private school. School is too much like jumping through hoops that are oftentimes pointless and oftentimes fails to cultivate a child's mind to its fullest potential. Oh well, we get what we paid for: nothing.

To wear a seatbelt really isn't a choice, well unless you have the money to pay for a 132$ ticket where I am at, and they enforce it too. It is annoying that they can pass laws that should still be our choice, no matter how statistically safer it is for yourself. I could understand if that affected the safety of someone else, but I don't see where it does. Hell for years cars didn't even have seatbelts, then after that all they had was lap belts and later shoulder straps. They put them there for safety, not for you to be forced to wear them well at least in my opinion.
So for grading measures it should take the kid longer to do something he can do in about five minutes, not to mention the time added for learning the teachers method and getting it down. Though due to my unique methods it was easy to find out which kids I was doing homework for, though the great one was when the teacher started giving me Fs for having someone else do my work for me. (Got to love new schools...)
The US schooling system is definitely horrible, but until we have like a Nation wide curriculum set into affect or something it is going to stay that way. Some states are worse then othes, sadly I live in one of the not so great states. Washington with the WASL, the stupidest requirement for graduation. Though I have yet to understand why kids can't pass the thing, it is mostly multiple choice and you have unlimited time for the essay parts.
--- Quote from: kurandoinu on September 28, 2009, 07:51:35 AM ---Lol Klocknov. The working out thing sucks ass.

It used to annoy the hell out of me when I had English classes at school and my teacher used to read my work out ALL the time. Everyone assumed that because I was in a lower ability class I should be thick, in actual fact I was only in that class because I chose to do business studies. I ended up getting the highest English grade in the year. But still, why did she have to read my work out so often? So embarrassing.

--- End quote ---
I loved English, I was forced to read stupid books and write summary essays. I did good when it was a book of interest, even Romeo and Juliet was an okay read but half the books had no draw in them for me and I fell behind due to that. Though another part that I ended up having problems with is most teachers said poetry wasn't a part of English class (usually that meant I did that in a free-write) and that would make me either have to do a re-do or fail. So you could say I never did so great in English. Though I never understood why I was having spelling tests all the way till I did internet school, thank god I learned how to use sticky notes quickly.
Though I would have to say my favorite class was Science, when I was able to attend the classroom. (I showed up for class every day I went to school, the teachers just for some reason didn't like me in the classroom.) I don't know what I did in science that almost half the time I would be kicked out of class, that is starting at 6th grade, and then I wouldn't be pulled back into the classroom till another student got kicked out (if I was lucky) or until the end of class. I got to the point I would leave my stuff in my locker and just bring a notepad and pen (easy to put in hoody pocket) to class. I even had other teachers allowing me in their class to help out most the time during that period, since they got tired of me just sitting around for 50 minutes. Though when I actually got to stay in class I was one of the top performing students in labs and classwork, that is another part of why I never got why I was kicked out half the time. Though the office did try to step in on that one, in the end they said just stay in the building or come to the office and just hang out during class.

*FACEPALMED* (Note to self: the bill of the hat doesn't only hurt the head when you facepalm into it, it also hurts the hand.) Diet soda in general just annoys me, though I have friends and family that drink it due to being diabetic.

This brings on another pet peeve, when people press enter after a quote so their is a space between their text and the box for the quote. I understand when your going to a different point as a way to separate the ideas, but when there is already going to be a visual separator it is quite annoying to me.

Viseroid:
@Klocknov
Regarding the enter after the quotes thing: I didn't even notice :D. Might be a habit from quoting long paragraphs when I was writing papers for school.
You're in Washington? So am I :). Yeah, the Washington seat belt law is a load of BS. I understand it's for your safety but people should still have the freedom to choose. They probably put it into law to get the fatality numbers to look better on paper. I also wouldn't be surprised if the insurance companies have a say in it as well. The lesser your injuries they less they have to pay out. Lobbyists are the puppeteers of this country.
The WASL, sigh. How long does it take, a week or two? The exams to become a police officer, military officer, and lawyer are shorter than that. Kids who don't know how to speak English very well get screwed by it even though they may excel at math. If they don't pass the WASL they don't get a diploma, no matter how well they did in class. Though the WASL was created for the purpose of gauging how well teachers are teaching the students the curriculum but whats the point of a grade point if the WASL is the end-all be-all? And should the kids really be punished for the lackings of the teacher? Why should these kids forfeit their diplomas just because they weren't taught well enough?
*steps off the soap box*
People who talk excessively loud on the phone have a special place in my heart. They just don't seem to know that the mouth piece is 1-2 cm away from their mouth and the other person's phone has a volume control. If you're going to talk loud enough that the other person can hear you without the aid of a phone please do so somewhere else.

Klocknov:
@Viseroid, hey someone who agrees with me on the WASL, I haven't had many outside my family that did so, well minus a few close friends. Also I sometimes speak loud on the phone, but that means I'm in a super noisy environment that otherwise I wouldn't really be able to be heard otherwise. (Ex: ball game, a concert, ect.) Otherwise I tend to talk in my normal tone, which some people still view as loud since I have a voice that carries...
