IEatAnime, Keishou Subs, KubuSubs, Kyuubi Fansubs, Generation NeXt, Koharubi, SubsFuckingWhere, gg & DatteBayo?, Crunchyroll?, Taka

WTF??? Isn't this overkill  :o :o :o

Don't bother listing them. Half of those you listed will be gone once Crunchyroll officially announces they'll stream this.

Do they acquire the license or just the rights to distribute the videos on their website?

But who cares? As a viewer, I couldn't give a damn about what CR does. Its not like they can send out C&Ds, I'd rather have FUNi doing that than some nitwits trying to be "professional" and "legit" while using "under-handed" means at the same time.

CR actually does send C&D letters to fansubbers.

Without a license? Some will ignore them. Actually, most new fansubs are starting to adapt to that and they're hosting their stuff ... however they host it.

I checked Eclipse host and it was a funny website that had no links to anything. It was just graphs of how much they're seeding. We need more fansubs like Eclipse. :|

No, they have a license. Otherwise they would not have the right to distribute.

Okay, you're losing me. There is Licensing and then there is Distribution. I know there is a difference between the two. If you license, then you have the right to actually say "I own this" or something. Distributing ALONE isn't sufficient enough to say "I own this". You just have the rights to make copies and sell them and make profit. Am I correct? Yes? This is what I was told.

A shorthand definition of a license is "an authorization (by the licensor) to use the licensed material (by the licensee)."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/License

Basically, when you license you get the right to say "this is my job".

For example, when FUNimation licenses anime, they get the right to say "this is my job" within the US (and possibly more countries depending on their license) but the studio in Japan still owns the property inside Japan and other countries not covered by the license.

A license can get very specific. For example, Turbine has the license to make Lord of the Rings MMOs based off the books (or was it the movies?) for PCs. If they want to extend their licensing to more than PC or more than MMOs, they will have to enter discussion with Tolkien Enterprise and pay for the addition to their license.

In this case, the license may only be limited to subbed English simulcast but it's still a license.

Thus, they can send C&D letters if you step on their ground.
