I love the movie! Though it was bad timing for watching it when I did. At that time I wasn't in the brightest mood and I knew nothing about the movie. Only heard that it's good. Well, I hit rock bottom after the movie... Wasn't able to rewatch till then...

I knew nothing of the outside world. I was just a frog in a well.

... But there's hundreds of people claiming it's just about the best anime movie ever - and with that I came expecting a piece that's deep, that I can actually gain something from, that has some insight to offer. But there's none of that.
How nice for fanboys to ruin your fun. I definitely won't rate B5c anywhere in my list of top movies. I watched it expecting a Shinkai movie, and I got my Shinkai movie: lovely art, a bit of bittersweet nostalgia, a distinctly simplistic flavour, and at the end there is just no point, moral or theme to it.

You might like it better if you ignore the fanboy hype and just treat it as an hour-long walk down nostalgia lane. Hype tends to spoil things >_<

I did like The Promised Place because of the military aspect, though. Actually getting to see the YF-23 in action ><

I swear to god, this is the last Shinkai movie I'll watch as long as he's the writer.

I have to agree with the hype part. I went into the movie with high-expectations of awesomeness. I understand the story that is being conveyed, and can relate to it (like many I'm sure). It was just too convenient, too predictable for me to get any enjoyment. It was, for me, like watching the obvious unfold in a very photogenic manner. Not very original, or even inventive, but in fact quite common.

That being said; I did enjoy the scenery, and I thought the ending was handled well. Conversely, it may be that we hate what hurts the most.

This movie left me feeling "Meh" about it.

A lot of hype over this, and if it was more so put on the quality of animation over the plot/script then i'd have to agree.

Thats not the case so....meh  :-\

I don't know what is going on in this thread. When I saw it, most of what I had heard about it was that it was boring and frustrating, not that it was the best movie ever, and you know what I thought when I saw it? "That was almost the best movie ever"

I was teetering on the edge of full blown tears (and I haven't ever actually cried to an anime so far in my anime career) since the end of the first section, and if there had been one single actual tragic event, I would have been absolutely sobbing. Now, all of us who saw it know that Shinkai didn't choose to take the "soap opera tragedy" route, so it ended up just being melancholy and not pound-you-in-the-heart tragic, but it still manages to give me goosebumps every time I think of it.

I'm just rather surprised that so many people didn't get it. At least we can all agree when it comes to the beautiful art...

tl;dr, it was by no means perfect, but it is still one of my favorites.

I hated it. The amazing art doesn't make up for everything that it lacked. It was deadpan as hell, I didn't feel any emotion whatsoever. I wouldn't even call it light drama, it was completely flat. And I couldn't feel anything for the characters because of it.

My favourite Makoto Shinkai work. Most of his work has little dialogue, and if you like spectacular characters and stories, no doubt you will find it boring. All of Makoto Shinkai's works can be described as visual poetry, and it's the insignificant matters and small nuances that create emotions (as opposed to a war going on in both Voices of a Distant Star and Beyond the Clouds. Those are arguably the "bigger matters", but what creates emotion is the "petty bond" between two people. Nothing has changed with that in 5 cm/s, it's just that the sci-fi setting doesn't exist anymore. If you enjoyed his previous works because of this element I'm in awe :o). Because I didn't find it emotionless at all, quite the opposite. I was sucked in pretty quickly, and it ended before I noticed.

Of course people can find it boring because nothing on a bigger scale ever happens, but I found it very good, and it's among my favourite movies/OVA (rated it 9/10).

l for once liked it, artwork is great, sound is perfect, and the story is interesting, altough l don't like the ending l understand the whole story completely, if it ended differently it would be a waste, really, you have to check if yo uactually watched it from the correct point of view, you guys probably expected something romantic and cute, but this is a melodrama with a really interesting point in the world.

btw, who was the VA for Akari ? l have this weird feeling l heard her quite a lot.

in over all this is a great story, presented in a great way with superb artwork. you have to grow some life experience to actually be able to understand it and enjoy it a little,

my favorite episode however was the first one, but l belive tha tif the story would allow, and they persisted,

The artwork is great, but one must realize that it's not a very exceptionally surprising movie. For that reason, it doesn't excite or awe anything. Not to mention, the movie is so consistent all the way through, it's very easy for someone to miss the climax and other aspects. Not to mention, I found the story somewhat shallow.

It's a great movie if you want something calm and relaxing. Also great if you don't want to use your mind to try and unravel anything.

HOWEVER...

If you want excitement and action. You'll hate it. If you want to try and apply philosophy, psychology and logic... or try to unravel the story and find multiple layers try something else.

Apparently different sections use different VAs, like Ayaka Onoue and Yoshimi Kondou. However, neither of those two actresses have ever done anything else aside from 5cm. Now, I'm going to go out on a limb, and assume you weren't listening to Hilary Haag, Erika Weinstein, or Tara Platt, who have all been in a lot of shows.

Yea, that's about right. It relates to me so that's why I liked it a lot.

doesn't relate to me but for some weird reason l do like this movie, l wasn't expecting anything so maybe thats why l didn't get dissapointed in the end, the ending is a bit off cuzl was thinking how nice it would be if they ended up together, biut that wasn't the point of the movie and the story, this story is different, yet so common around Japan is what l feel, l mean, in reality, who of you all didn't have a similar situation ? you meet a great girl or boy and this seem nice but they don't go well enough and fate throws logs at your feet, this story isn't exactly what l been through a few times in my life, but l was in similar situation 2 times, when l think back, if l stopped at some point and turned around, l would probably be with that girl l meet those many years ago, it's such a typical story world wide actually that it's kinda comforting, this movie is good, if you didn't get this movie then you still have a few ways to go l suppose.

ahhh, now that l thnk about the past l feel like calling a few ppl and setting up a meeting to reminisce :] how nostalgic actually :)

Thanks Tatsu for getting me around this movie :]

oh tomoz l'll work on those pics l posted in fate topic, this is probably the last post for at least next 10 hours,

I liked it a lot.

Mainly because the movie wasn't focused on who the characters were, as I found it to be myself as the main character and not whatever his name was.  That's the kind of connection I felt while watching the movie.  Granted, it does help that I grew up with a girl that I pretty much knew from birth.  I ended up moving to the other side of town, then to a different town all together and we just kind of drifted apart since then.  I didn't really think anything of it until I watched 5cm.

Also, my parents were divorced a few years back and my mom moved to Florida with my little brother two years ago.  We still talk, but not as much as we used to.

I was going to add more about the negative opinions, but why bother?  We all have our own views that we form out of our own individuality  ;)

I dunno why I'm so attached to it. For the past 2-3 weeks I've been listening to the songs from 5 centimeters per second (excluding the vocals, One More Day).

I've also included Spice & Wolf II opening and ending song theme and an additional song from season 1.

But I just like this movie a lot. This is probably one of the best movies to show to a friend. This movie just shows you that life is bitter and better yet you gotta learn how to move on.

yeah, but on the other hand it gets you this warm feeling that youre not the only one that goes through this stuff as well, and l'm sure some of us did go through this as well, kinda makes you less sad about this, and yet this movie indeed is a really good story, the first ep was especially incredible for me, but the whole movie is a lot like what l been through in some periods of life the only thing regrettable in it is that

one great movie, did i thank you tatsu for noticing me about this ?
if not, l thank you now ;]
