Windows 7 OEM
« on: October 06, 2009, 05:48:40 PM »
All right. So I was looking through the different bots and [a-S] and came across an .iso for the x64 Windows 7 Ultimate. It's the OEM that was done by BIE and I guess I'm just curious.

Is this the genuine Windows 7 that is gonna be released on October 22?
Are you still able to access Windows Updates with it?
Is it pre-activated or do you have to download the Windows 7 Loader?
What do you think will happen to all the people that installed this OEM?
Will it stop working once Microsoft deals with the OEM master key that was leaked?
Has anyone here actually installed this Windows 7 Ultimate?

My last question is: Is Windows 7 Ultimate worth the upgrade from Windows Vista Ultimate?

Features and everything else, yes. Checks Windows 7 out first. I am upgrading.

Btw, we already have an on-going thread about Windows 7 in general and we were discussing OEM's as in the lastest posts.

I have completed "that thingy" 1-2 days ago. Uploader said it was genuine (?) and does not need activation or keys. Unfortunately the torrent was removed from the tracker before somebody could give proper feedback.

I am done with the backups and will probably install it tomorrow. Currently using XP Pro 32bit.

Microsoft might do something to prevent it from functioning properly, but we will see in couple of days.

yes there is a popular post somewhere here about it :)

I haven't tested this ISO yet (since I have a legit copy/serial) but based on the comments I've read, it works fine.

It tricks the OS into believing that you're using an OEM machine (from the likes of Dell, Lenovo, etc). Whether activation is successful depends on whether your configuration can trick the OS.

If activation doesn't work, there are still ways to have Windows activated using this installer but it may involve flashing your bios.

I believe this is quite borderline piracy talk to be talking about a certain release.

How about trying to find the source of the iso? You should probably be able to find the iso's origin if you search with Google.

will do. The thing is I built my own pc, it is not branded so I might fail.

If I succeed, somehow I have the impression that problems wont occur before October 22nd.

i see. well i guess my biggest question is, if i make a complete backup of my vista ultimate and then install the new windows 7 and everything runs smoothly. no problems, activation works and everything but then come october 22, it stops getting updates.

can i then restore the backup i made of vista from my windows 7? it should return my computer back to normal correct? i'm not quite sure cause it's two different OS's.

I believe you can still get the critical security updates even if your serial is blacklisted. Windows will prevent you from installing optional updates though. It will also nag you for using a pirated key.

I won't bother trying the ISO you mentioned though if your going to rely on automatic updates. Somewhere along the way, you'll just get screwed. If your going to use it, update your system manually.

BTW, Windows 7 Ultimate is not worth investing in for most users. The professional version is enough. The additional content in ultimate aren't worth the additional cost for most people.

so i can upgrade my my 64 bit vista ultimate to the 64 bit windows professional?

and would i have to purchase the "upgrade" option if i don't want to have to re-install all my programs, or can i purchase the OEM copy?

Yes you can. You can purchase the OEM copy and do a update install. There is a catch though: depending on the number of software you've installed as well as some other factors, the upgrade install time may take several hours (the highest I've read is around 20 hours).

Looks like I'm wrong(?) check the image below for a clearer explanation. I'm confused myself now.  :'(

EDIT: You can also perform an update install using an RC copy of windows 7.

all right. according to the image if i don't want to re-install programs i'd have to purchase the 64 bit windows 7 ultimate. lol. damn my wanting the best vista at the time.

so i just have one last question. not considering the money or having to re-install the programs... what option generally runs better, the upgrade or the clean install?

EDIT: so i take it that the OEM only does clean installs?

Bit matching upgrades will not need clean installs.
Bit mismatching upgrades (32->64 or 64->32) will require custom installs, which means that you will need to reinstall all your applications after the upgrade.

@joseole99: per pysren's notification, I acquired the 64bit version of the os considering that the line of 32bit operating systems will be over in a couple of years. It will not be a problem when windows 8 emerges.

the installation was laggy at the beginning, as if nothing was happening, but it might be something related to my pc only.

fully activated and blah blah, tho it might break soon :)

Honestly there is nothing technical that i can add, here is what it looked like after the installation.

good luck.
