Clannad question
« on: October 09, 2009, 01:48:50 AM »
well i was gonna just post this at the end of a clannad thread i saw but it hasn't been posted in in over 120 days and it told me to just make a new topic so here goes

clannad was on my back burner of stuff to watch when im playing catch up. i still havent even d.loaded it but i heard it was one of the better slice of life shows from the past few years. Anyway i was checking out rightstuff and theyre selling the series for about 45 bucks (first season) I was gonna buy some other stuff and figured id pick this up if its any good too so im going to give it a d.load and check it out

couple quick questions

im asuming the viewing order should go
Clannad
Clannad after story

but wheres the clannad movie fit in? between the two? after the after story?

also are there any specials or anything i should check out? And it doesnt' list it as particularly ecchi so should i worry about finding uncensored versions or anything when d.loading after story (since that ones not out on dvd here yet) It doesn't look like it from the little bit i read. I was just going to snag them from here real quick since i dont feel like looking around.

oh ya.. i guess i'll see soon enough but hows the series? Is it mostly slapstick or does it have some real drama in it? I heard afterstory is suposedly a tear jerker or something. Does it actually follow up to clannad? just wondering what this is really about, the description sounds like a plain vanilla slice of life/relationship show but its rated really well and ive had a few people mention its one of the better ones of the past few years

tnx guys

it is an alternate story, I suggest watching it after ~after story~

there are 3 specials where the main character likes a different girl, some of them are good, some of them are just ok.   And the show doesn't have anything along the lines of real ecchi content, so no need to worry about other versions

The first season starts rather meh... mainly because the first arc tends to drag on (IMO).  After that the series picks up and After Story just gets better.  The first season has a lot of slapstick comedy (the main character's jokes are what kept me entertained during the first arc), but the second season tones it down a lot.

In before lock...

1) Clannad S1 Episodes 1-23
2) ~After Story~ Episode 23(An interesting prequel special to S1.  While it comes before S1 chronologically, certain elements within it make it best to be watched after instead of before.)
3) ~After Story~ Episodes 1-22
4) ~After Story~ Episode 24 (Series Re-Cap Episode)
5)  Clannad S1 Episode 24 (Tomoyo Arc)(Because it's a side story special that uses a different storyline than most of the first and second seasons.)
6) ~After Story~ Episode 25 (Kyou Arc)(See #5)
7) Clannad the Motion Picture(Because the movie isn't very good and will tarnish the series for you.)

also are there any specials or anything i should check out? And it doesnt' list it as particularly ecchi so should i worry about finding uncensored versions or anything when d.loading after story (since that ones not out on dvd here yet) It doesn't look like it from the little bit i read. Nothing ecchi about it, so right, no need to worry about those little things.  BBT's Clannad torrents are the best you're going to find anywhere.
The first season is probably best labeled as Slice of Life, with the general things that come with it: light comedy, light romance.  It's more or less there to serve as a conduit to After Story.
The second season shifts to a Coming of Age story a few episodes into it, and it could be said that it "grows up" in a hurry.  Not in a bad way at all though.  More in a way that really puts you on the defensive for how fast it matures.
The second season is the part that gives the story it's high rating, but the first season carries the same weight due to the fact that a good Coming of Age story needs a good, carefree, juvenile backbone to set it up for success.

i cant see why it would be locked. I tried to post in the old general clannad thread but it gave me a message saying it was so old that i should start a new thread, so i did

blea im not liking this list of mixed eppisode watching im seeing. Last time i did that with Haruhi it ruined the series for me after the endless 8 garbage.

will it be fine to just watch clannad>afterstory>movie? or should it go Clannad>movie>afterstory? I really dont feel like mixing the seasons up back and forth. seems the movie may be saved for last

im a bit confused on the specials. if i look at the info the show is listed as 22 epps, but the list here goes up to 24.. just numbered that way. Are the last 2 specials or something? same with after story. ADB shows it as 22, but the file here goes up to 25 actually. Are the specials just mixed in there at some point?

im just snaggin them here because theyre fast and i want to look if its worth pickin up the DVD's. At least the first season for now

one thing i dont get is a lot of comments i keep seeing about after story is that its really sad.. sad how? like tragic or something? or just super drama sad? It looked like a low key slice of life show though some of you are saying after storys more 'mature'

Clannad>After Story>Movie will be fine.
I explained which episodes are what in my previous post, as to what the specials are.  It's not like Haruhi at all, because only the specials are out of place.  If you look...

1) Clannad S1 Episodes 1-23
3) ~After Story~ Episodes 1-22

...the actual seasons are kept intact.  It was just a suggestion on how to watch the specials.

You will have to watch it to find out.  Think of it as switching from slice of life to drama

Ignore the warning, the thing is it's pointless to make new threads when old threads exist. Keep everything in one pile so people can search easier.

I watched the movie first, then Clannad, and then AfterStory, and each season had the specials bundled in.
And it is sad, and does delve more into adulhood, but just watch it  ;D you won;t regret it.

Do NOT watch the movie before you've seen After Story or it will spoil things of it. Either way the movie isn't all that anyway, just an alternate retelling that doesn't differ that much from the series but has some annoying changes

The first season is 22 episodes, episode 23 & 24 are the specials
The second season is also 22 episodes, episode 23 - 25 are specials

too bad you didn't ask me about it, but oh well, like everyone says.
Clanna>After Story> Movie

but essencially, you don't miss out when you skip the movie, you don't need to watch it at all.

when l think about Clannad, first thouths : Most destructive weapon in Anime Universe >>Kotomi~chan's Violin Play<<
and to think she enjoys it lol.

Wonder what that could be hehe. To be honest think missing the film will not make a blind bit of difference to the series as i think its a very poor film, compared to Air the film but personal opinion there. Clannad After story should come with a health warning or free prozac, understand what i mean :D

l think the movie is good, if you think about it by being shown as a different world where things went similar, but quite different

I get that after playing the vn, but don't think it was a very good film in essence lacked lot of what i loved about clannad, said this before got to be hard to condense 45 episodes into a hour and a half and did quite well, just nothing compared  :)

tnx guys. I d.loaded season 1 to see if its worth picking up and watched 5 epps.. I dont know why, but it just really grabbed me for some reason. I actually wanted to keep going, this story arc with the little girl... fuyo? is really interesting. Im curious what the hells going on, and who/what she really is. Is the series getting into the supernatural? The characters in the intro so i wouldn't think she would just disapear so early in. Bah, but I figured i better stop it there and just order it then get cracking when the dvds were here, or else i'll probably wind up watching half the season in one go tonight lol

Im really not too sure why it interested me so much. I dont like the character designs. The guys look okay but the chicks have ridiculously large Moe eyes that irritate me. Maybe its the fact that the main character actually seems like a sympathetic normal guy instead of a girly little wuss/total nerd/total letch. The thing with his dad and basketball was kinda messed up and really helped explain why he hates going home. I dunno i find most of the characters interesting so far.

Maybe its the odd way it seems to kinda jump around from normal slice of life/comedy (the scene where he swaps himself out with the chick to fonfuse Fuyo and tells her to say 'it falls off sometimes' had me ROLLING) to a weird almost dreamlike state.

Which reminds me: that really weird ass existential stuff near the beginning of the first 2 epps with the 'dead world' and the girl and the robot she built outa scrap. WTF is that?! I dont really want any major spoilers, but im wondering(hoping) if that ever gets fleshed out or explained. I think i noticed the robot reaching up from the snow in the beginning of the intro but im not sure. It kinda gave me chills. Going from regular slice of life stuff to  "this is a world that has ended. Nothing is born; nothing dies. Not even time exists here" Then later seeing the scrap robot being 'born' and his monologue..Yeesh that was kinda outa nowhere lol.  Im just hoping they go somewhere with that because i think that was one of the things that pulled me in

Tnx for the info. I got the order down, gonna do season 1 and the specials and season 2 and the specials then just the movie after maybe. Im not gonna bix the specials up between seasons. One thing for clarification though: Since its listed as each season being 22 eps are the last 2 epps in each season the 'specials'? i think thats the way it is but want to be sure

Im stoked to keep going on this series. Though everyone commenting on what a tear jerker after story is has me really wondering wtf happens. Lol arsata says it should come with prozac =P

oh ya one side note, anyone seen sola? it was 25 bucks for the whole season so i think im gonna pick it up. I d.loaded it to check it out and it seemed kinda interesting.

Yes kenshin the girl/robot stuff plays a large underlying role in the story that unravels as you watch it.

It will play a great role later on, bit by bit you'll get more info but it's only at the end you'll get what it's about

WTF

Best to just take it as it comes.  Hopefully you bring out you marathon skills and we can hear about what you have to say about it after it's all done.  I like hearing what that ends up being, whether it's good or bad.  :)
