aspect ratio question

kenshin-dono:
i figured this would be the best forum to ask.

im a bit confused on aspect ratios for a lot of the shows im d.loading these days. If its 1280X720 its not a problem thats a clear 16:9 ratio. The problem is when i snag the lower quality stuff for shows i dont care as much about. How do you make sure the ratio is 16:9? the way i do it is divide the first number by the second and it should give me about 1.77777777777ect that works for the 1280X720 stuff fine, but when its lower xvid or dvd rips i run into problems.

I.e. with hyakko that im looking at.

i want the dvd version because its uncut, listed here
http://bakabt.me/torrent/146810/Hyakko_01-13_(704x480_DVD_AAC)_Coalgirls.html

BUT the ratio is listed as 704x480  which is friggin odd, it breaks down to 1.4666666 which is damn close to 4:3, moreso than 16:9. its some weird in between closer to the 4:3 ratio

theres an xvid tv version here
http://bakabt.me/torrent/143181/Hyakko_SS_XviD.html

with a ratio there of 704x400 which is 1.76, pretty much 16:9 (but that versions tv airing i belive which is cut)

now what the hell.. shoudn't the first DVD version i listed be 16:9 as well? i dont really get this. The screenshots for the DVD version apear to be widescreen but the numbers dont make sense. Plus on the first page of comments a guy put some screenshots halfway down
http://bakabt.me/details.php?id=146810&page=0#comments

and the DVD one looks screwy and squished

can someone clarify whats up with this? is that dvd actually 4:3?

Pzc:
I know very little about things like this but
the almighty wikipedia have a hint or two
until someone knowledgeable comes along:

--- Quote ---Anamorphic DVD transfers store the information vertically stretched in a 4:3 aspect ratio; if the TV can handle an anamorphic image, it will horizontally decompress the signal to 16:9. If not, the DVD player can reduce scan lines and add letterboxing before sending the image to the TV, made easier by the simple 4:3 aspect ratio between 4:3 and 16:9 (16:9 = 4:3 × 4:3).
--- End quote ---

From Wikipedia.

kenshin-dono:
hmm so it should display properly on a 16:9? then why does the resolution ratio come out so different when you divide the numbers? and whys the screenshot the guy took on that page look so off?

blubart:
1) the guy is a gal :P
2) 704x480 anamorphic 16:9 means that the video is encoded in 704x480 and a flag is set so your player stretches it to 853x480 (for correct 16:9)
3) in this case it seems like the encoder cropped a lot on the sides (from the source), so to not stretch the image more than intended he set the flag to resize to 848x480 (15,9:9) instead of 853x480
4) yes, it should display in (~)16:9 when you open the file in your player

what looks off in the screenshot?

morrefule:
Pretty much just as blubart said

Pulse here is a good fact to know

And 704 x 480 = 480p in 16x9 Aspect ratio on a broadcast signal
And 720 x 480 = 480p in 16x9 Aspect raton on a DVD Rip which can be a conversion from 720 x 576

those are just the standard formats for broadcast and DVD formating.  I know it is a little wierd but this site might help you, though i don't know the site personally, the information seems pretty accorate to my knowledge.
