Breakfast
« on: October 13, 2009, 01:50:34 PM »
A man wakes up at 9 PM  to get ready to go to a 10 PM work shift.
His first break starts at about 11:45 PM to 1 AM.
He gets off work at about 6 AM to 7 am and goes to bed at 2 PM.

If the food he eats in his break is the first meal he eats after getting up is it considered breakfast or dinner since its so late?

I usually work nights (about those same hours). I find it easier not to worry about naming meals or time of day. If I was forced to give it a name, it would be lunch (2-3 hours after the shift starts), but it doesn't really hold much meaning. Night people make thier own schedules.

It's dinner.

If you get up at 7am, go to work, come home and eat at 10am, it's brunch.

If you wake up at 5pm, you don't generally eat toast + jam or cereals, you have a meal, it's dinner.

I'd still say lunch.

That's explained by meals called "brunches". Between the time period of breakfast and lunch.

So Let's get this correct here.  You have meals in this order...

Breakfast (6a - 10a)
Brunch (10a - 12p)
Lunch (12p - 3p)
Dinner (3p - 6p)
Supper (6p - 11p)
Midnight Snack (11p - 3a)
Post Drinking Binge (3a - 6a)

Comments?
I have typed these words and you have been forced to read them.  Now you can go cry in the corner if you like :)

actually, the answer to the question lies in the entomology of the word

Break Fast

It is the meal where you break your fast (a period of not eating), and as the period where you are sleeping is (for most people) the longest period without a meal, the first meal after a long sleep is considered to be the one to Break your nightly Fast.

Thus, no matter what time of day it occurs at, the first meal of the day is ipso facto Breakfast.

Here, we call that supper or midnight supper. Yeah, our timings are kinda shifted back a little... my family eats dinner at 7pm.

I only have one meal I call by a name and that is dinner, and dinner to me is the family together eating a meal. Past that once I move out I will just eat food on my own awkward schedule.

I disagree. Meal names are done by time.

Since you can skip breakfast and go straight to lunch, I'd say that whatever meal you have should be called by the name at that specific time period. Just because you eat late doesn't mean your meal name was delayed, but instead it was "skipped".

You might be able to get away with it being called breakfast if it is late enough to be considered morning. Otherwise, his "first meal" is a late supper/dinner.

I disagree. To me meals aren't named to a specific time as it is more to the fact that most people are active during the day thus it just more common to eat them in or about these times. Besides Iv heard it said that breakfast is the first meal in the day after getting up from bed. For me that would be about 11 since it takes me about an hour to fully wake up to the point where i would get hungry anyway.

In my country's lexicon, breakfast is literally 'morning rice' and supper is 'evening rice' by virtue of etymology. Lunch remains lunch.

I wouldn't call what I eat at midnight a 'morning rice', eh.

Cool avatar, btw.

So if you sleep during the day and woke up at night you wouldn't consider your first meal after waking breakfast?

Thanks it's the level up Icon from Neverwinter Nights. (And yes this is how its spelled)

I wouldn't call it breakfast. Habitually I named my meals according to what time I was taking it.

Just wondering but where are you?

As far as the lexicon is concerned, I'm from Korea.

Yeah, NWN's an awesome game.  :) I play it until now.

First meal of the day is named breakfast and forget the time line. Its breakfast not matter when you eat it. It makes it simpler. Well at least for me.

additionally... we're discussing the english word breakfast... which has no bearing on the lexicon of other languages...

You may have "4 p.m. Snack Time" in foreigneese as the name for Teatime, but it doesn't change the fact that in English, teatime just means the time at which you take tea.

I've given up on naming meals (since they aren't really meals anymore)

I figure whatever is eaten shortly after waking is breakfast.

If the sun is still somewhat high in the sky, its lunch.

If the sun is sinking a lot into the west, then its dinner/supper.
