.... Since when was Samsung not a brand name? o_0

Anyways, from what I've read online, this is the drive inside of it (or something similar; it's gonna be from Samsung, and it's going to be that type, but perhaps it's not quite THAT model, basically). I like what I don't see right now. Perhaps you WD fanatics have some basis to believe that everything else is terrible? I don't know, I honestly don't mind my "off-brand" choice. If I start minding it at any one point in time, I'll tell you.

Cute, huh?

Some people absolutely have to have a product from one name brand.  It's a very common disease.

Every drive manufacturer has rumors swirling about their quality.  Bad batches happen, especially when major changes are made, and it isn't limited to any specific company.

WD, Seagate, Samsung, Hitachi, Fujitsu all make good drives.

At least that external looks like it can be easily broken open without destroying the case and seems to have at least some ventilation.

Samsung drives are pretty decent, although they don't really target the same market as WD's mainstream drives. The Spinpoints are really good low-power drives (although they have a higher spinup current pull than the WD greens).

Fujitsu drives are mainly seen in their laptops (don't know about their desktops) and in enterprise systems, and like with all things Fujitsu they tend to be a bit on the pricier side, but again their service support is good enough to be worth the premium (IMO).

Personally I’ll go with WD more, for personal needs. But I readily admit that it’s out of price considerations more than anything; WD prices just tend to be cheaper here, and Newegg doesn't ship here either. Also, for some odd reason, Seagate drives here only get 3 years warranty, while WD drives get 5...

Nice external by the way, it looks solidly built, and I like the vents at the back. I can't see too clearly, but are those Torx screws at the side? If yes, then yay for chunky Torx screws! \o/

I have had Maxtor, Seagate, Samsung and WD hard drives break on me, so I don't trust a single one :P

How about playing 1080 BD anime on USB external ?
USB 2.0 transfer rate is around 480mbit/s (around 60mb/s). A 1080p video frame is around 2mb, streaming at 23/29 FPS requires between 46 and 60mb/s of transfer rate. This is not counting the sound channels and data information. Knowing that you will not always hit the 60mb/s USB 2 limit, my first guess is that the video will lag from time to time.

White Album 1080p CoalGirls, FLAC. Or Evangelion 1.11 DTS by THORA. Played those two, zero problems. Of course, with CoreAVC (custom options) and CCCP (custom options).

Please treat the above as lowbrow comedy.  You don't stream raw video and audio from storage media.

BD 1X is 36Mb/s.  9MB/s for raw blu-ray playback from optical media.  Considering the much higher compression and much lower bitrates of the typical 1080p BD sourced anime file, you probably don't need any more than 2 - 3 MB/s to ensure completely smooth playback.
The best transfer rates you'll get over USB 2.0 will be around 35 - 40 MB/s, an order of magnitude greater than the minimum.

ya i have no problem viewing 1080p stuff on my several year old 500mb maxtor so i doubt these would have any problems

ive decided on the WD elements simply because it has none of the stupid BS bloatware the other stuff has. I heard the new WD mybooks actually cant have it removed with a simple format or anything either, which is just lame.

the only thing i cant decide on is the 1tb, or 1.5tb... it looks like the new models dont even make the 1.5's anymore, were they having problems with them?

xshadow i actually considered that sammy for a bit but i think it had a buncha bloatware backup software. Did it come pre-installed or were you able to use it without installing it?

Personally ive had good experiences with sammy products and their HD's are decent from what i hear. The only brand i generally hear really sucks is seagate. Theyve had some serious disasters in the past

Well i cant buy internal right now :( So first i need to ask  How about playing 1080 BD anime on USB external ?  Is it ok?
And i need to know is  WESTERN DIGITAL My Book Essential 3.0 1000GB, USB2.0, 16MB cache, 7200rpm, WDBAAF0010HBK-EESN better extern hdd WESTERN DIGITAL 3,5" Elements Desktop 1000GB, USB2.0, 7200rpm WDE1UBK10000E and why?  (I entering on hdd files very often. I dont care if its noisy or nice looking i just need stable disk to play HD films.)

im not sure about that 2nd model number you put up i cant find it, the first ones the new mybook essenstials and it frankly looks crappy to me. They got a buncha bloatware transfer programs on it that i hear you cant really remove. there was an older WDH1U10000N i belive that was reviewed well and didn't have all that crap

Personally I have no problems with Seagate. I have found in the past that they have high rpm speed for about the same price of lower rpm of other brands.

My 2TB external is a Seagate, though it's fairly new I have not seen any problem with it so far.

Oh, that stuff. Yeah, it had some kind of folder that assigned it a certain icon in My Computer. Other than that I don't think I remember it doing much. You don't need any of the software on it to actually use it, and in fact even the icon change can be taken care of by just reformatting it (to NTFS, for instance). All of the "bloatware" that comes with it is already in it, and it's up to you to install/use it. You don't need to. Word of caution though: in case you want to KEEP the stuff that comes with it (the programs), like I did (I just wanted to make a backup of them while I reformatted, in case I wanted to play around with them later), don't put it directly in any of your system drives. I made that mistake and my C: drive now has a Samsung icon. >_>;

... Not that I mind, particularly. It actually looks pretty good. I'm sure if I looked it up somewhere, I could change it back fairly easily, but I'm just leaving it alone for now.

Edit: In other words, it's plug and play...

I've had all sorts of disks fail on me from all manufacturers...

Currently I just had a WD disk got kicked from my RAID array twice on read fail around the same portion of the disk...  Not the same sector...

foreboding complete failure... it's still working somewhat but trustable?  I don't know.  I think the warranty's out on this disk so I'm SOL I suppose.

Will I stop buying disks from WD?

I'll still buy disks from WD.

Seeing both Seagate hdd's fail (ones made before the maxtor purchase) Im sticking with hitach & WD.

Just lost 450gb worth of data this week from the seagates, so I have two free externals but theyre IDE (NexStar, and some... hairline hdd with a fan)

Saying that whats max GB from a IDE hdd?

You'd spend less on a 1.5TB SATA drive and separate enclosure than you would on just a 750GB IDE drive.

They might make decent paperweights.

Or sell them to other IDE users... they also make great material for case-modding.
